MADali, the point everyone is trying to make is that "with some drugs you cannot expect you can try them just once" is not a tired anti-heroin cliche. It is an actual thing that is reflected in the huge number of people who have a direct personal experience with somebody dying or ruining their lives from trying it. The number is even more huge if you include painkillers like oxycodone, which you might as well to a certain extent. I would assume a sizable proportion of people who get addicted to it plan on only trying it once, because doing heroin has been a glamorous or tragic-seeming meme for a hundred years. I'm not the insane junkie that I probably appear to be talking about drugs aggressively at a board where only crazy people do or talk about drugs, but as somebody who does like some drugs I can say that my decision to never try heroin did not arise from hearing ridiculous implausible horror stories about it, or watching Requiem for a Dream while high on other drugs and thinking "Heroin is just... the worst" (which is a thing that happens a fair bit in the world). There is too much hype surrounding heroin, not the least of which is its reputation as the drug people think they'll try once right before it ruins their lives. Much like nobody doing cocaine is capable of not feeling a sense that they are amazing just for the fact that they're doing cocaine, I don't think somebody injects themselves with heroin and goes "Oh, this is nice. This is like it always looked in movies and TV shows. Well I'm glad that's finally settled!" I also recognize that the alignment of factors that would allow me to try heroin (trying to buy some heroin, for instance) would make it that much harder for me to get away from it when I find out heroin feels really good. Also I try to keep some perspective on my drug EXPERIMENTATION which involves asking myself "Am I thinking and doing exactly what anybody rationalizing their drug abuse would do?" Among other things, that allows me to recognize what patterns of thought can lead somebody to actually convincing themselves that they need to try heroin eventually.

Not because I want it, but because not-getting addicted to it is being made out to be this insurmountable challenge.
