My radio show starts up again this week, and I'm looking for some new music. It is a rock show, though I am not adverse to playing stuff that falls outside of "rock" as long as it is interesting and good (such as stuff off the new TV On the Radio album).
We try to play stuff that is upbeat, staying away from ballads, jams, or "coffee shop" soft rock. When we play punk or metal, it is more mainstream/classic than hard core (like The Ramones or classic Black Sabbath, The Stooges or Deep Purple). |

Shonen Knife is like a japanese female Ramones, The Minutemen everyone knows these guys, some of Frank Black's solo stuff is really really great, Billy Bragg is kind of an indie folk rocker
none of those 4 are super obscure or anything, they all have some catchy songs. |

The Hold Steady - "Cattle and the Creeping Things" (seriously, this song is great)
Rancid - "Poison" (from their overlooked self-titled album after Life Won't Wait)
My Bloody Valentine - "Cupid Come"
Pulley - "Second Best" (Slightly darker than other mid nineties West Coast pop punk bands. For pure sunniness with sad lyrics, try "Gone")
Shellac - "Prayer to God" (only if it's a late night show that allows cursing)
The Vaselines - "Teenage Jesus Superstar" (when my mom complains about my hair, I tell her hey ma, I just don't care)
Weezer - "You Gave Your Love to Me Softly"
The Walkmen - "We've Been Had" (remember that commercial?)
TESLA - "Edison's Medicine" (ironically)
The Rentals - "Barcelona"
Transplants - "California Babylon" (Tim Armstrong's shampoo commercial music)
The Strokes - "Hard to Explain"
Built to Spill - "Sidewalk"
Propaghandi - "And You Thought Nation States Was a Bad Idea"
NOFX - "Vincent"
The Fall - "Carey Grant's Wedding"
Most of these songs are pretty upbeat and catchy, I guess. Most of it's kind of old. I don't know for certain that good rock music is still made.
Try some stuff by The Black Kids. They're OK. |

Hey, how come that time I asked you to recommend the best music you'd ever heard, the one album that was the most crucial piece of your understanding of music, you recommended some bar band that was your favorite of the moment?
(It was The Hold Steady) |

I tried to get this guy to stage dive with me at a Hold Steady show, and instead he started making out with me. We were right by the stage, and the singer gave us this look of confusion and disgust.
It was like he was thinking, "Am I some kind of gay icon, and I don't realize it?" |

That Rancid song is actually from their shitty, repetitive "Rancid 2000" LP. |

The Vandals are pretty upbeat
and NOFX Vincent isnt all that upbeat at least if you know what the song is about it isnt.
People like Queens of the Stoneage I havent listened to them that much but they seem swell for a show.
