I believe that this place is AS SPECIAL AS IT IS basically because we are not "open" to new posters.

Open boards have to maintain a sort of lingua franca with the rest of the Internet, so as to facilitate noobs. Subconsciously people at other boards know that they can't get TOO FAR AWAY from the average person, and constant new arrivals keep the sophistication level low. They don't evolve, because they can't. They're also usuallly about some overriding topic or site, whereas this board is about nothing, except us. What brings us together isn't a topic, but a basic like-mindedness. We also know each other MUCH more closely and intimately than people at other boards know each other (in general).

I agree with you in spirit that I'm incredible, but if you were not a member of this forum and didn't have it recommended to you by a friend, you wouldn't be able to find it in a million years. I conclude that the number of forums similar (in some ways) to this one is unknown and unlikely to be zero.
