One time I heard a sound that was a lot like a baby crying, and I was really scared, and I called out to the baby, then I walked towards the sound and it turned out it was our cat in the entryway and the acoustics of the room were making his meowing sound like a baby.

Of course, it's very convenient for me to accept "acoustics" as an explanation of this phenomenon. Yes, there's a nice scientific-sounding word that nobody would think twice about.
