That's what Lexy said, that I was misunderstanding your intent and shouldn't make the post, but I went ahead and made the post anyway.
If she had her way I wouldn't make ANY posts! |

I have been on the internet since the late 80s. Prodigy (Mad Maze, anyone?) and dial-up BBSs (used to call into the Sierra hint BBS and print out walk-throughs all the time in the late 80s, early 90s. By the way, just picked up the Quest for Glory anthology off GoG for 5 bucks. Never owned #5, so it was worth it even though I still have original copies of the games on my computer).
First web connection around '93 or '94. Also used to use CompuServ, The Sierra Network/TSN, and early American Online. Used to play dial-up Doom 2 with my best friend across the street all the time. It kinda sucked because 14.4 and 28.8 kbps modems would drop you all the time (and we didn't have second phone lines, so it would drop when someone called in).
Watched my first anime (Vampire Hunter D) in 1992. Used to watch anime movies with my best friend (we would rent the handful of movies available at the rental place at the time).
(Adjusts glasses that are made from other, nerdier glasses).
But I was never a fanatic about the shit. Chris, you can take that to heart, at least. |

You probably weren't on the Internet if you were just using services like Prodigy, CompuServ and early AOL. Their networks were primarily self contained. _________________ @}-,-'- *~*~* Member of the FTU Elegant Tea Party Society *~*~* -'-,-{@ |

What is the relationship between BBSes and the Internet such that it's possible to be on one and not the other?
I remember posting on a BBS or listserv or some bullshit back in 1995 or 1996. |

A BBS is someone's computer with usually one modem, or if it's a big BBS with multiple modems. And you telephone in to one of them to connect.
Generally you're only connected to that one computer, too. Although sometimes BBSes had Internet access that you could use if you dialed in, and there are other networks as well, like FidoNet (which was global). _________________ @}-,-'- *~*~* Member of the FTU Elegant Tea Party Society *~*~* -'-,-{@ |

One of the other annoying things about BBSes (other than sometimes getting a busy signal) was that you had to pay long-distance phone charges if the BBS was hosted across the country or the other side of the world. Sierra On-Line was in California, so it cost a little bit of money to call in and access the correct walkthroughs. After a few times, my dad would sit there with me and we'd choose a number of games (even those I didn't own) and just print out all the hints so that we wouldn't have to go through the annoyance of calling in again. We'd have boxes filled with printed hints (the best thing about a dot-matrix printer was pulling off the punched edges).
I don't remember if it was a 1200 baud modem or 2400, or if we had both. 9.6 was such a big deal when it came out. |
