Theldorrin, you are overestimating the technical ineptitude of people who get this.
I mean sure if you're L33T level 10 and your computer is in a state of paranoid nerd lockdown at all times, and you know about and have already patched your computer against the security hole in the version of Acrobat Reader that came out fucking last Tuesday or whatever, then you're probably not going to get it, but this is very easily gettable by people many levels above idiot.
It's not like 2001 where you actually had to purposefully, retardedly click exe's and screen savers attached to blank emails from 232566@zzy.com.
You really should read through some of the STORIES in this thread:

On my media PC, I never install anything except codecs. Use this as well:

I don't patch Acrobat Reader because I don't have Acrobat Reader. If you have it, you're obviously not technically adept.
Use Foxit instead.
I'm not sure why you're downloading PDFs from questionable sites, for that matter.
Another thing to do is ensure you have UAC set up. It makes it so that you get a popup when you try to install things. That fixes drive-by installation problems.
I don't even have anti-virus installed. I just check my computer every few months and it's always clean.
Viruses were actually much more inobtrusive back in the day because they'd hijack other executables or reside in the boot sectors of disks, and the tools to deal with them were much crappier. I got way more viruses before the Internet was widespread. _________________ @}-,-'- *~*~* Member of the FTU Elegant Tea Party Society *~*~* -'-,-{@ |

Foxit badly mishandles interactive form fields and many pdfs crash it altogether.
California's 540EZ tax form, for example.
To say nothing of advanced pdf functions!
Foxit is not strong enough to handle many pdf-related tasks. Speaking at least for myself, not-having Acrobat isn't an option.
Smartypants.
And it doesn't solve the problem of Adobe having a stranglehold on the pdf-reading market for 98% of computer users. You can't expect the entire world to just suddenly move away from the standard and adopt ALTERNATEWARE (hey look: new, gay "-ware"-based term, because we totally need more of those).

Are you kidding? Is this a serious statement? You actually allow that piece of shit to lock your screen and force you to hit an OK button every single time you want to do anything (and approximately every 4 minutes while idling)?
I tried to keep UAC on. I made a valiant effort. jucheck.exe is what finally broke the camel's back. Java's ENTHUSIASM about checking for updates defeated me. Just fucking go ahead! |

Yeah, it sucks when companies use that bullshit. There's really no reason for them to do so, and I hate when it happens. Another good thing to do is to change it so that it doesn't open up a PDF within a window. That allows them to stealth run PDFs and you don't want that. You want it to prompt you, because there's a big difference between a PDF that you want to look at from a reputable site and one that gets you by surprise, which is where malware hides.
They don't have a stranglehold on 98% of the market, either. I almost never encounter PDF forms. They are pretty uncommon.
Also, you should enable UAC. It is not a bother at all, and I say this as both a software developer and a power user. I'm not sure what on earth you're doing that you have frequent issues with UAC, but that probably explains why you're getting all sorts of malware installed. Why are you getting prompts when you're idling?
One good tip is to install games and development tools (web server, XAMPP, etc) outside of c:\program files.
Java doesn't update that frequently. _________________ @}-,-'- *~*~* Member of the FTU Elegant Tea Party Society *~*~* -'-,-{@ |

Also, it's stupid to complain about the software used when you're in control of what you use.
Install Foxit as the default PDF thing, change the settings so it doesn't open within the browser, and install Acrobat Reader as a secondary thing that you only use when you absolutely have to. Like how you sometimes have to use IE for garbage websites. _________________ @}-,-'- *~*~* Member of the FTU Elegant Tea Party Society *~*~* -'-,-{@ |

For the record, I *personally* have only gotten this thing once, but the people AROUND me are bombarded with it, and Lexy tells me that it's steady work for the Geek Squad.
It's just an extremely nefarious and widespread problem!
My original point to this thread was, why hasn't this been categorically stopped? It's been going on for years now, and it STILL seems to sail right through most of these shitty anti-whatever programs.
It's just really obnoxious to have sit through automatic updates fucking CONSTANTLY (my boss's computer), only to get hit by one of these anyway (which it did, twice). Thanks for "protecting" me, Windows!
I guess UAC WOULD stop it, theoretically, since the things make registry changes.
But god, UAC. There are certain programs that cause UAC to pop up every single time, simply by running them, and I don't have the patience for that bullshit (or to customize every command line so that it doesn't pop up). |

Which programs do you run that cause UAC to pop up?
You can solve that by installing to them outside of c:\program files, because the problem is probably that they are modifying the contents of their own program directory (to save settings there or whatever).
Adobe is very bad about patching their garbage software so those bugs last something like a year before they're actually cleared up. _________________ @}-,-'- *~*~* Member of the FTU Elegant Tea Party Society *~*~* -'-,-{@ |
