I'm currently reading a biography of Lyndon Johnson called Master of the Senate, and it's pretty awesome because it presents Lyndon Johnson as having no beliefs whatsoever other than "Lyndon Johnson should possess more power than he currently does."

I mean, people generally assume all politicians lie about what they believe, but there's no way that the average U.S. Senator gets away with things like telling one of his colleagues "Don't worry, I support your bill 100%", walking across the room, telling a member of the opposing party "Don't worry, I am opposed to that bill 100%", and somehow coming out of this situation with both of them believing him. And he apparently did shit like this CONSTANTLY.

At one point, in order to win the support of the oil industry, he completely destroys this guy who President Truman is nominating to run an energy agency. He brings in all these witnesses to testify that the guy is a Communist, just slanders him nonstop, refuses to let him defend himself, and basically destroys the guy's entire life's work and renders him unemployable. Then at the end of the hearing, he walks up to the guy and says "Don't take it personal, Lee. Hell, it's just politics. We're still friends, ain't we?" Somehow this made sense in his mind.

He was the Platonic Idea of being an asshole.

Naturally, this led to his becoming the most powerful Senate leader in U.S. history.

I was bored tonight and reread the first 2480 posts of Theldorrin's journal thread. At that rate I could reread both of the main forums in about ten weeks. Clearly, this indicates that we need more posts.

I don't you if you remember the conversation where we concluded that it was foolish to feud with each other as long as things like Islam existed in the world, but I took that very seriously!
