I have to admit that I'm finding the "if you replace ÷2 with ÷x, then the answer will equal 2, therefore it must be 2" argument (that I'm seeing in other FORA) compelling.

No, solving for x, algebraically.

First let's have the equation equal 288:
48 ÷ x(9 + 3) = 288
48 ÷ 9x + 3x = 288
48/12x = 288
4/x = 288
4 = 288x
4/288 = x
1/72 = x

Obviously that's wrong. x is not 0.01388888, it's 2.


Now let's have the equation equal 2:
48 ÷ x(9 + 3) = 2
48 ÷ 9x + 3x = 2
48/12x = 2
4/x = 2
4 = 2x
4/2 = x
2/1 = x

That DOES work. x = 2.

Also, I am not, personally, capable of defending this, as I'm an ignorant, incompetent dumbfuck at math (obvies!!). I'm just telling you what I heard! Looks okay to me!

48(1/x)(9+3) = 288
48(12/x) = 288
576/x = 288
x = 2

48 ÷ x(9 + 3) = 2
48 * (1/x)(9+3) = 2
576/x = 2
x = 288

That is a terrible argument. Solving for x does nothing to expose the difference in reasoning that results in the different answers. No one who understands the subject would use that argument, like no one who has ever been in an airplane would say "if one plane flew right behind another, how long would it take before the front plane's rocket engines burned it up?"

Means:

or:
