Post     Re: Arithmetic

How is 2 the correct answer?

If you follow PEDMAS (parenthesis, exponentials, division/multiplication, addition/subtraction, moving from left to right) you get:

48÷2(9+3)
48÷2(11)
24(11)
288

Any other way is incorrect.

48÷2(9+3)
48÷(18+6)
48÷24
2
IS WRONG, because you did not complete the parenthesis first! The 2 is outside the parenthesis.

or

48÷2(9+3)
48÷2(12)
48÷24
2
IS WRONG, because you did not move from left to right. Division and multiplication occur at the same time and there is no hierarchy between them other than moving left to right. Same with addition/subtraction.

Also, the equation should be interpreted as:
48 ÷ 2 x (9 + 3)
not
48 ÷ (2 x (9+3))
Otherwise the additional parenthesis would have been included. It isn't implied!

I don't even know what to think anymore! Anyways, I did 2, because of Peter reasons and that I might be dumb.

Unless you're Theldorrin, the answer is 2.

The end!

Welp, if Wolfram Alpha accepts that gay syntax then that sucks, but it continues to be gay syntax. Written by hand there would be no problem since no one would use diagonal slashes for division on paper; typed, if someone sent me that, it is not good enough and I would send it back for disambiguation. If you want me to destructure an implicit multiplication and give it equal weight in the chain, it needs an operator, even if Wolfram Alpha will muddle through mechanically.

Ace, you're safe in that most people agree with you, but also it seems like you didn't comprehend any of the past 20 posts.

It's BEDMAS, you bloody yanks. They're brackets, not just parentheses.

And it's not just for me that the answer is 288. That's standard mathematical convention. You can plug the same thing in to Google and Wolfram Alpha and get 288, because that is the standard way to parse that expression.

48÷2(9+3)
=48÷2(12)
=48(0.5)(12)
=24(12)
=288

It actually doesn't matter if you evaluated it left to right or right to left.

=48(0.5)(12)
=48(6)
=288

You can even fiddle around the order of the terms and arrive at the same answer.

=48(12)(0.5)
=576(0.5)
=288

Post     Re: Arithmetic

My Head Hurts 90, what would you say if if were 48/2*(9+3)?

Ms. Kitts, even though M comes before D, the two are treated as a single unit (imagine that) and evaluated together from left to right, so once it's stated reasonably the answer is definitely 288.

What do you think 2/2(2) is, Peter?

Well, if it's Javascript, it's 2 divided by the result of invocation of the function 2 on the argument 2. If it's C++ then it's 2 divided by a 2 that has been cast to type 2. If it's XPath then I have to use Google.

I'm sorry, that was disingenuous and serves my own ego more than it serves truth. You deserve better. By the way, what are the names of the two distinct operators you drew attention to, that cause the discrepancy between 2π and 2(π)? We didn't learn those two in American school.

Post     Re: Arithmetic

One is a simplified term, the other is not. They have very distinct meanings in terms of implied brackets.

Observe:

2/2x
= 2 / (2x)
= 1/x

2/2(x)
= (2/2)(x)
= x

I know that. I was sure that my succession of extraneous exclamation marks would indicate that I was being facetious, but I'm pretty retarded with math so I can't fault anyone for assuming I wouldn't know!

Math is so much better than English.

I gave the wrong answer, but a simple rule to follow is to put all M and D within brackets.

(48/2)(3+9)
(24)(12)
(288)

288
