IN THEORY, I'm always happy to do things for free for friends. But the truth is unless I'm getting paid for it or doing it for a grade, I will not be sufficiently motivated to actually do anything.

That was the case with a video game project I was involved in for a little while. I would have received a portion of the earnings based on the percentage of work I contributed.

But I thought the game was stupid and I didn't care, and I couldn't justify taking time away from school work, so I stopped.

For instance, right now I'm getting commissioned by a guy to paint monsters into Bob Ross-style paintings from Goodwill. He's paying me $75 in advance, to total up to at least $150. And he will probably want a whole set after this initial one, so that'll be even more money. It doesn't hurt that I like the idea a lot, but now that I have this guy's money, I'm like, fuck, I better get this done!
