Jay, if Americans were afraid of nuclear power we wouldn't have the largest number of plants in the world. _________________ Last edited by God on Fri Apr 05, 33 4:00 am; edited 1 time in total |

Oh, yeah, that is probably why they were not mentioned in the book then. _________________ Said the Captain PUNisher. |

This is so awesome.
Japan is on the verge of multiple catastrophic nuclear meltdowns with extreme consequences, like, that's happening, RIGHT NOW, and Theldorrin (WHILE THAT IS HAPPENING) is calling fear of radiation "irrational" and defending the safety of nuclear power.
Theldorrin's world is mindblowing!

What's going to be more awesome is when the radiation is carried across the Pacific and you get cancer and die and Theldorrin still won't admit that he was wrong. _________________ Last edited by God on Fri Apr 05, 33 4:00 am; edited 1 time in total |

In Santa Cruz, there has been a local run on potassium iodide!
Oh well, if a radiation cloud comes here and melts me, at least I can fulfill my dream of not being alive anymore. |

The media is very excited about the nuclear reactor story because it's something active that is happening.
That whole tsunami thing that killed thousands and caused entire towns to vanish is so yesterday's news.
I'm still not sure what exactly you're suggesting the alternative energy for Japan is. They don't have the geography for solar, wind or hydroelectric.
The plant would probably have to destroy all of Japan and South Korea for it to make nuclear as dangerous as coal, and probably parts of China too, to make it as dangerous is not having electricity at all.
Incidentally, a lot of people are completely unfamiliar with the inverse square law. _________________ @}-,-'- *~*~* Member of the FTU Elegant Tea Party Society *~*~* -'-,-{@ |

In all honesty, I don't think Japan is fit for human habitation. I certainly couldn't live with the looming threat of being swept out to sea.
I'm still waiting for an alternative, Chris. You can't point at something and say it's dangerous, while ignoring that the alternatives are more dangerous. Even if you have no electricity then you have more deaths because electricity is very useful for lots of things that keep people alive.
You also have to examine the actual number of people that have died from this as of yet, and compare it to the actual situation that took place. _________________ @}-,-'- *~*~* Member of the FTU Elegant Tea Party Society *~*~* -'-,-{@ |

Eh, well, if you're going to come at it from this angle, I guess I can sort of agree.
Though "lesser of a selection of evils" is not the same thing as "harmless." |

It is, because essentially nothing is harmless. It's all an allocation of resources from one thing to another.
I'm posting on this message board right now and that's time I could instead be using to earn money, exercise, eat healthy or any number of things that are arguably better for me. _________________ @}-,-'- *~*~* Member of the FTU Elegant Tea Party Society *~*~* -'-,-{@ |

I want to know who says that Japan couldn't power itself through clean, renewable energy.
And furthermore, who says that it isn't possible to achieve the kind of energy ubiquity wherein Japan would be able to purchase its electricity from nations with lots. _________________ Last edited by God on Fri Apr 05, 33 4:00 am; edited 1 time in total |

Well, they have a high population density and not a lot of geographic area. They don't have a desert like the United States, which is conducive to solar power. They probably have fully exploited their hydroelectric options, since that's generally cheaper than alternatives. I'm not sure why they don't use geothermal energy, but it probably has something to do with their earthquakes, or maybe it isn't enough considering their massive population and industrial base. Tidal would be a fishing problem, and I don't know if it would generate enough. Plus I'm guessing they'd be completely destroyed in a tsunami.
The nations closest to them have similar issues with a very high population density, plus China is incredibly energy starved as is. Not to mention the fact that they're an island, so that means undersea power cables a fair distance with a large quantity of voltage. Plus it'd mean dependence on a foreign power for energy. And you have fewer options for that when the cable comes directly from them.
These are all plans that are vastly in the future. _________________ @}-,-'- *~*~* Member of the FTU Elegant Tea Party Society *~*~* -'-,-{@ |

Actually, I forgot that hydroelectricity is probably dangerous to Japan too. A dam could break and drown thousands of people. _________________ @}-,-'- *~*~* Member of the FTU Elegant Tea Party Society *~*~* -'-,-{@ |

| Also, every country near Japan is at least mildly hostile to them, so I don't think the Japanese would enjoy being at their mercy. |

Being dependent on a country that hates you for fuel isn't apparently something people find that abhorrent. _________________ Last edited by God on Fri Apr 05, 33 4:00 am; edited 1 time in total |
