*Meri makes a DBZ music video to this song*
*Fourteen year old Jason watches it, weeps with emotion*
*Jason mentally inserts his DBZ Mary Sue into the video*

It's possible Ace just succeeded in telling a joke but R.E.M. is also a hugely popular and influential American band.
I would still pick CCR as the best American rock group since they are so *American* and since they rock so goddamn hard.
I think I've heard all the albums by the Doors but still haven't really gotten into them. They strike me as a little too artsy fartsy and dated, but I could be wrong. I would add the Flaming Lips to the list of excellent current bands, also since they cop a lot from Neil Young and Neil Young needs an American proxy in this.
Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Frank Zappa, Prince, Tom Waits, Stevie Wonder.
Steely Dan is very jazzy and at some point after their first couple albums they started using just session musicians instead of actual bands. This probably shouldn't disqualify them though.

Don't discount the Grateful Dead. At one point, they were a billion dollar enterprise built around boring jams. |

Yeah I'm sure the Grateful Dead deserve consideration but I've only heard one album by them.
Limp Bizkit were crucial in taking Faith, Behind Blue Eyes, and the phrase "My Generation" and making them digestible and relevant for Americans. |

Meat Loaf. I only have Bat Out of Hell I and II, but together I think they amount to at least the significance of Born to Run. |

Jim Steinman:
I started writing what I felt was Bat Out Of Hell part 2, definitely like The Godfather part I and part 2, that's how I saw it. I wanted to do a continuation and I wanted to do an album that went even further and that was more extreme, if possible, which a lot of people felt wasn't possible but I just wanted to see if I could make a record that was even more heroic because that's what I thought of it ... Bat Out Of Hell to me was ultimately very heroic though it was funny ... and I wanted to do one that to me would be even more heroic and more epic and a little more operatic and passionate.[2]
It's funny, because that sounds like a deluded narcissistic pretentious cretin, and Bats Out of Hell are such ridiculous albums, but I totally understand what he is talking about, and Bat Out of Hell is goddamn heroic, and I'm only listening to II for the second time right now but it's making me so pumped I wanna scream!!! |

Hahaha that last quote from 1981.
In a 1993 promotional interview for the album, Steinman reasserts the continuation of the Bat world. "I didn't call it Bat Out of Hell II just to identify with the first record. It really does feel like an extension of that... It was a chance to go back to that world and explore it deeper. It always seemed incomplete because I conceived it like a film, and what would you do without Die Hard 2?"[3] |

Meatloaf is not on the same tier as Springsteen.
But I thought we were talking about bands, not individual artists.
The Talking Heads, the Stooges, the Dead Kennedys, the Pretenders, and Heart are more important than Meatloaf, and I don't think any of them have been mentioned yet. |

Heart is not a substantial band by any stretch of the imagination. Their hits kick ass but that doesn't count for anything.
Dead Kennedys wouldn't trump Ramones for a punk rock inclusion.
Bat Out of Hell is absolutely mining the same nostalgic/subversive 50s mythology that Springsteen does on Born to Run, and they used many of the same musicians in their respective nostalgic send-ups. No shit that Meat Loaf is not on the same tier as Bruce Springsteen. Anyways Meat Loaf/Jim Steinman is too close to Andrew Lloyd Weber to be in the running for American bands. |
