I started rewatching Battlestar Galactica yesterday and it occurred to me that the reason that original religions in science fiction always have far more tangible merit than real religions is because presenting an original religion that was just as absurdly unfounded as a real one, viewed without the context that comes with living on shitty, stupid Earth, would leave absolutely no one thinking its followers were believable, identifiable or sane.
