Military Investigating Video that Shows Mystery Object Shoot |

A mysterious missile launch off the coast of California was caught on tape. Erica Hill reports.
(CBS/AP) The Pentagon Tuesday said it was trying to determine if a missile was launched Monday off the coast of Southern California and who might have launched it.
Spokesmen for the Navy, Air Force, Defense Department and North American Aerospace Defense Command said they were looking into a video posted on the CBS News website that appears to show a rocket or some other object shooting up into the sky and leaving a large contrail over the Pacific Ocean.
The video was shot by a CBS affiliate KCBS' helicopter, the station said Tuesday.
"Nobody within the Department of Defense that we've reached out to has been able to explain what this contrail is, where it came from," Pentagon spokesman Col. Dave Lapan said. "So far, we've come up empty with any explanation."
Lapan said officials are talking to the Air Force, Navy and NORAD as well as civilian authorities who control and monitor air space.
"Right now, all indications are that there was not (Department of Defense) involvement in this," Lapan said, adding that some object might have been launched by a private company.
The FAA told CBS News that they ran radar replays of a large area west of Los Angeles based on media reports of the location of a possible missile launch, but they did not reveal any fast moving unidentified targets in that area. The FAA also did not receive any reports of any unusual sightings from pilots in the area.
Missile tests are common off Southern California. Launches are conducted from vessels and platforms on an ocean range west of Point Mugu.
The North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, issued a statement jointly with the U.S. Northern Command, or NORTHCOM, saying that the contrail was not the result of a foreign military launching a missile. It provided no further details.
"We can confirm that there is no threat to our nation, and from all indications this was not a launch by a foreign military," the statement said. "We will provide more information as it becomes available."
NORTHCOM is the U.S. defense command and NORAD is a U.S.-Canadian organization charged with protecting the U.S. from the threat of missiles or hostile aircraft.
CBS station KFMB showed video of the apparent missile to former U.S. Ambassador to NATO Robert Ellsworth, who is also a former Deputy Secretary of Defense, to get his thoughts.
"It's spectacular… It takes people's breath away," said Ellsworth, calling the projectile, "a big missile."
Officials had no information to make them suspect that the action was taken by any U.S. adversary.
"At this point, until we know more information about what it may have been, there is not alarm," Lapan said. "But that could change depending on what we find out."
Experts: Mystery Contrail Was Plane, Not Missile
Sharon Weinberger, Contributor
AOL News (Nov. 10) -- It's a bird. It's a plane. Well, actually, it is a plane.
At least that's what experts and the military seem to be saying about Tuesday's scare over what initially looked like a mystery missile spotted off the coast of Los Angeles.
The Northern Aerospace Defense Command already weighed in Tuesday, saying the unexplained contrail posed no threat to the nation. But NORAD did not speculate on what the source of the missile-looking contrail might come from. Now, experts are saying why it's highly likely that what a helicopter camera crew captured on camera was a plane, not a missile.
There's a rich history of unexplained contrails being attributed to secret aircraft, UFOs and, yes, even missiles, and the problem comes down to how the human eye perceives direction ."[A]s surprising as it may sound, the object seems to have been simply an aircraft contrail, with tricks of perspective making it look like a missile flying away from you, when in fact it was an aircraft flying toward you!" Robert Sheaffer writes on Bad UFOs, a skeptic blog.
What the camera crew saw that made them think it was a missile is nothing more than an optical illusion created by the angle they were viewing it from, according to Contrail Science, a blog that is dedicated to busting myths about contrails. In a detailed explanation, the blog says the alleged "missile" is likely America West Airlines Flight 808 from Hawaii to Phoenix.
According to Contrail Science, there are three reasons why the contrail looked like a missile: A horizontal contrail can look vertical depending on the angle you're viewing it from; as contrails disperse, they give the mistaken perception of being closer to the viewer, when it fact they are further away; and contrails that look like they are starting from the ground are really simply beyond the horizon.
In other words, the brain does not see physics.
The Pentagon, at least, is satisfied with that answer. "There is no evidence to suggest it was anything other than an aircraft," said Col. David Lapan, a Pentagon spokesman, according to Agence France-Presse. |

Why did you bold those parts? Them acknowledging it wasn't a foreign military launching a missile is obviously something they would want to get out there, regardless of what it turned out to be. |

He bolded that to say that since it wasn't US launching it and it wasn't any foreign military...so that leaves only...?? Obvious logical conclusion, Matt.
"We can confirm that there is no threat to our nation" is bolded because why would they say that if they claim they don't know who launched it? Maybe they know something we don't know??
"But that could change depending on what we find out." is already a clue that they will find something out and they will tell us what it is!
Bottom line, all this points to aliens. |

I find the whole thing an interesting case study in modern official storytelling. Whether there was a UFO in this case is completely irrelevant.
The bold parts are completely contradictory. |

The military never denied it was one of their missiles. They test missiles all the time. Where is the conspiracy? |

California Missile Mystery: Pentagon Rubbishes Missile Launch Theory, Calls It An Aircraft. After a full 48 hours of the incident having taken place, Pentagon has revealed that the vapor trail spotted in the Southern California sky was actually an aircraft.
Pentagon spokesperson, Colonel Dave Lapan said, "There is no evidence to suggest that this is anything else other than a condensation trail from an aircraft." He also iterated on the point that there is no security threat to America.
A video of the vapor trail in the setting sun, had been captured by a news agency helicopter on Monday evening, in California. The cameraman from the agency had commented, "I saw a big plume coming up, rising from looked like beyond the horizon and it continued to grow. Whatever it was, it was spinning up into the sky kind of like a spiral. It was quite a sight to see. It was spectacular."
None of the government agencies had offered any comments over the past two days; on being questioned to explain the condensation trail. This had led to wide speculation on the matter, right from missile launch to UFO's, going on to alleged security threats to the U.S.
Colonel Lapan rubbished all missile-test rumors, saying that the official missile test would usually involve air space being closed off and a notification to all shipping affairs in the area. But there was no notification of the event.

There's Gurren Lagann happening over our skies everyday, by the way. But the important thing is that you can get 99% of the public off your back with a few circular explanations where you neither confirm or deny anything. |
