I think Home Improvement had separate episodes where JTT was going to die and where the mom was going to die. I don't think either of them died though!

Ghosts, I was thinking of Home Improvement today. Specifically the scene where they play poker and Al folds every hand, and eventually all the cool salt of the earth guys would just say "Al folds" in unlikely unison.

I watched that whole thing, because why not, and sitcoms are weird. I haven't watched one in a long time, and it was kind of surreal.

There are all of these parts where the audience laughs at things that simply aren't funny. And not in a "the joke is bad" way; they laugh where THERE ISN'T ACTUALLY A JOKE.

At 6:50, Tim goes: "You need five of one suit to make a flush," and then Al goes, "Oh, then I fold."

And then the audience laughs.

Haha! What? Why? Why did they laugh?

It actually made ME laugh. So there I was, laughing simultaneously with the audience.

And that's when I realized that a mindblowing thing was happening.

The audience was laughing because a character's hubris was shown to be in error, and he humorously admitted this without saying so directly. It is most likely a precise analog to any number of jokes that made drunk Greeks pee their togas and if I opened the Wikipedia page for "types of jokes" I would probably observe the first item matching this description. That is why the audience laughed.
