'Standard Tipping' has absolutely increased as Chris has said.
I also think it's laughable how waiters in an all you can eat buffet are for some reason supposed to be tipped less than a normal waiter, even though they generally do a lot more work for it.
Also, since tips are a percentile, there is absolutely no reason for them to increase because they'd increase as prices in restaurants increase or whatever other thing is the primary service increases in price.
My tips vary from about 15% to 100%. I tip a more for haircuts than for food service.
How much of a person's tips are under the table (Ie. not reported on taxes)? _________________ @}-,-'- *~*~* Member of the FTU Elegant Tea Party Society *~*~* -'-,-{@ |

What?

That's assuming the the minimum wage accurately reflects the cost of living and is similar to the minimum wage laws of other areas. Except servers usually make half of whatever minimum wage is, and that has been a trend as well. |

| No, it doesn't assume anything about the minimum wage. It assumes that restaurants will raise their prices in line with inflation and that a percentile tip based on those prices will go up too. There is no way that inflation is an argument for switching to 20% tips. |

The point is though, shitty pay is not something WE, the customers, should implicitly endorse by steadily increasing tipping.
I know there's not really an easy solution, but tipping more isn't the answer. The industry needs to be held accountable, not the customers or the servers. |

The same people that advocate 15-20% tips for normal waiters say that you should tip waiters at buffets only 10-15%.
They do more service than normal waiters. For example, look at Vito's story where he rewards them for refilling his pop twice. Meanwhile if you were at a buffet, you can generally get your water refilled a half dozen times. Not to mention places constantly being taken away and so on. Plus the fact that they do ordering, too.
Here's an example where people talk about buffet workers deserving less.

Half of minimum wage that doesn't reflect cost of living increases plus a percentage of food prices which more accurately reflect cost of living increases is certainly much better than just earning minimum wage. _________________ @}-,-'- *~*~* Member of the FTU Elegant Tea Party Society *~*~* -'-,-{@ |

It has nothing to do with percentage rises of inflation, I've said that. It's the opposite, that wages have no risen with inflation (They've decreased), so in effect we tip more to counter-balance that.
Chris, that line of argumentation is bullshit. If you really cared, you'd eat at restaurants where the servers are paid well (Trust me, these do exist). You just don't care at all about people who are in the serving industry. |

One thing I really hate about tipping discussions is that a lot of Canadians will jump on the bandwagon with respect to tipping because we're culturally almost identical to Americans. But I think Ontario and maybe some of the tiny provinces are basically the only places where people in hospitality industries can be paid less than minimum wage sans tips.
Also, some of them talk about tips after taxes which is also stupid. _________________ @}-,-'- *~*~* Member of the FTU Elegant Tea Party Society *~*~* -'-,-{@ |

| "Half of minimum wage that doesn't reflect cost of living increases plus a percentage of food prices which more accurately reflect cost of living increases is certainly much better than just earning minimum wage." this is only true if you actually have clientele who spend money or you work at a more high end restaurant. |

| Between Chris's dumb math argument, Vito's magnum opus, and everyone on the board at each other's throats about tipping etiquette, this has been a very painful thread to read. |

I find that the 'meaningful' statistical claims are far more insidious, because people think that they're actually true. _________________ @}-,-'- *~*~* Member of the FTU Elegant Tea Party Society *~*~* -'-,-{@ |
