I only started reading again (like, non-Internet reading, I read fucking voraciously on the Internet but I guess that doesn't count) when I discovered audio books.
I hope that's okay with Theldorrin! |

I don't know why you'd think I'd be so pro-reading. _________________ @}-,-'- *~*~* Member of the FTU Elegant Tea Party Society *~*~* -'-,-{@ |

| People have such a baron von toity attitude about audio books. It's a 1:1 mapping that eliminates none of the need to think critically and do visualization! |

The one advantage in textual books is that it can cultivate the reading skill, which is a very valuable skill. If you're already good at reading then there's not really any special benefit.
Although most people read far too slowly in my opinion. _________________ @}-,-'- *~*~* Member of the FTU Elegant Tea Party Society *~*~* -'-,-{@ |

| I can't tell if you're being sarcastic but there are potentially a lot of skills involved in reading and there are a lot of ways to read well or read poorly. |

| Audiobooks are good when you are driving a car in traffic or something, but its a bit stupid and boring to sit down and just listen to it in your bedroom. |

I think the big problem with audiobooks is how long they take to listen to.
They do have a lot of advantages when it comes to using them when you're doing something else, like cooking, for you folk. _________________ @}-,-'- *~*~* Member of the FTU Elegant Tea Party Society *~*~* -'-,-{@ |

| Yeah, when you are doing other things, its very useful, which is why I was listening to them while driving everyday. |

I can't stand audiobooks because the narrator will talk in a retarded falsetto if he's reading a female character's dialogue, and I find it really distracting. Also, yeah, it's often too slow for me. _________________

Jim Dale fucking owns Harry Potter, and Hermione in particular.
So fuck your "high-pitched" criticism, because he was perfect.
And of course you listen to them while doing other shit! That's the whole point. That's why I started reading again with audiobooks, and stopped reading physical books in the first place, because books monopolize your hands and your vision.
The key thing you can do with audiobooks is walk and/or exercise. Getting exercise is the biggest timesink in the world. So if you can double your workout or traveling/walking time as your reading time, awesome. |

| I guess for an educated adult I'm pretty bottom of the barrel at reading, at least at reading fiction produced in the last couple thousand years. Deciphering symbolism and allusion and all that shit is a Herculean task and after many hours rolling on the floor clutching my cranium I end up with an interpretation too dumb to be dreamt by anyone but me or a five year old who wasn't allowed to leave until he answered every multiple choice question on a test about the book. |

No, I'm serious! A few months later I remember nothing about the events of the book! Books always feel too long to me because everything I grasped could have been communicated with much less redundancy!
ALDP, there's nothing I won't do to convince you that I can't read well. |
