I have been playing Civilization games since 1994, and I have only once ever won at a level (comparable) to Prince. Roy is a beast.

The teams were Ace and Servbot vs me, and two AIs were thrown in. We were all on one continent together (by coincidence, the map wasn't Pangea). I was on the far west end, Servbot and Ace were to my right. To their right were the two AIs. Servbot's empire actually cut me off completely, so I had zero contact with the AIs for most of the game (this was bad because it meant I couldn't trade with anybody). Near as I can tell, Ace started a war with China but I don't know how it went, he may have captured a couple cities, but they were still huge.

I beelined Rifling then adopted Nationhood, this allowed me to draft 3 redcoats per turn on top of my normal production. After I did that I conquered cities as fast as I could run, not even stopping to heal (Servbot brought caveman clubs to a gunfight). Ace tried to save him with medieval era units and even some musketeers but it was no use. When I entered Ace's empire, I wondered why all his cities were completely empty. Then I discovered that it was because he retreated and massed every single soldier he had in the capital city, so we had this apocalyptic final battle in the capital. I researched Steel and brought in my new cannons and that was that.

The game took really long?

I think I normally play between noble and prince, depending on the map setup (some maps are easier than others, like when you get your own island).

What empires did Ace and Servbot play as?

It actually didn't take long, they play pretty quickly, but we started at about 4:00 PM when I usually go to bed at 3:00 PM! It ran to about 8:00 PM.

Ace was Alexander the Great of Greece and Servbot was Zara Yaqob of Ethiopia. I was Roy Jonze Jr The Magnificent of Canada (actually England, I renamed them).

Actually, it isn't good to start on your own island, because you can't trade with other AIs until you get caravels. Meanwhile, all the AIs on the other continent are trading with each other, so you'll be left behind unless you tech your ass off. I guess it's a personal preference. I like starting beside AIs so I can trade, then when it's convenient I crush them and hear the lamentations of their women.

Oh, I mean where everyone is on their own island. I think the Islands map or whatever.

Ending up on an island by happenstance wouldn't allow me to pick a difficulty to go with it anyway.

Oh yeah, that would be much easier. Having your own island when everyone else doesn't isn't the end of the world either, but you need to prioritize Optics.

We should totally play sometime! If you can hack it on Prince that's pretty good.

On an island! I think I normally play on Warlord on Terra or Pangaea.

My big problem with Civ is that it so strongly encourages aggression.

Or at least that's what it seems like, because I recall I played a game as a hyperaggressive asshole and ended up killing everyone very quickly. I think the difficulty was higher, too.

And it pisses me off because I have way more difficulty playing as a peacenik, even though I'm presumably very experienced at it.

What timescale did you play on? I guess that's probably why you got so far in so little time. I keep forgetting that there are options for that.

Normal, ancient start. Quick is stupid and I don't have the patience for Epic or Marathon.

You can play well peacefully too, but you really do need a minimum number of cities to be powerful. Six is the absolute minimum, so you can build Oxford University and Wall Street.

You can play well, but I don't think you can play as well.

I don't know if there are any strategy games where peace is more profitable than war.

In my current game I started to play as a pacifist, but I was also declining trade agreements left and right. France eventually pulled me into a war and it felt like it took way to long to wipe them off the world. Now I'm taking on Russia since I no longer have room to spread my empire and they're the only other country I'm sharing the continent with.
