I guess to specify: It's not so much that people are against the Democrats because the Economy (big e) is doing poorly, it's the fact that people have actually had no understanding of how the government has actually affected their day to day life.

And I don't think you can always be cynical and talk about how people are spoon-fed "bullshit" by the media. The "media" effect is almost certain, but I think it's a pretty dull way to respond to the problem.
