Then again, I'm now in the process of watching the 4400, knowing full well that every episode I watch is basically just a countdown until the show abruptly just stops with no resolution of any kind, forever.

Chris, you should just watch the first season of Heroes. The season pretty much ends without leaving any loose ends untied. It's a pretty complete story and if you like X-Men it's pretty much guaranteed that you'll like Heroes season 1.
