| Wizardry was originally released for the Apple II. It doesn't give a month for the release date, so I suppose it's possible that it predates IBM personal computers (and even more likely that it predates IBM compatibles). |

There are much more platformers for computers than survival horror. If they were interested in a niche genre like that they should have listed Prince of Persia or Commander Keen (Commander Keen also benefits from being the best example of shareware).
Possibly a better example for simulations would be Lemonade Stand, since it's also much older than MULE (and obviously much older than SimCity), and a bigger impetus for the edutainment market that includes such classics as Oregon Trail and Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego. |

It's hard to think of an appropriate puzzle game to be on the list, which is annoying since puzzle games are by far the largest genre (I believe Bejewelled is the best selling computer game of all time, for instance).
I guess Minesweeper. I mean, Lemmings is really well known and somewhat influential, but mostly on the types of puzzle games that are not really around anymore. |

yeah instead of just 10 different titles they should have gave the breakthrough for genre.
Doom is always number 1 because it pissed off the government the most and was more than just a game as it helped the "games need ratings" thing. |

Hey cool, there's a thread for this already.
Theldorrin, I want to play some stock fantasy CRPGs. I've heard Wizardry 8 was fun, what else is there? I'm looking for Might and Magic and Gothic type shit. |

Wizardry 7 is very good, but the game is insanely difficult. The game is very non-linear (you can import your party from Wizardry 6, and depending on the ending you took in that game, you have a different starting location which necessitates doing things in a different order). Another benefit of playing Wizardry 7 is that if you do try out Wizardry 8, you can import your Wizardry 7 party (and also start in different spots based on the ending). Wizardry 6 is only EGA graphics (16 colours), so I dunno if you'd be up to that. Wizardry 7 and 8 are space fantasy/traditional fantasy, whereas 6 is more traditional (iirc).
Have you played Might and Magic Clouds and Darkside of Xeen? They're two games that can also be combined to create one giant game (each game takes place on one side of the world, and having both allows you to travel between them and do new quests).
The Might and Magic games before those two (Clouds is 4 and Darkside is 5) are actually not bad either. And there's a fanmade Swords of Xeen game that was created using the Xeen engine.
Xeen is also space fantasy/traditional fantasy but less so with the space stuff. It's also a bit goofier than Wizardry.
Darklands is the best historial RPG ever made. It takes place in 15th century Europe (only Germany and surrounding countries). It doesn't have classes, but instead a skill system, and instead of conventional magic you invoke Saints and create alchemical potions. It is totally non-linear, in that the game doesn't even have a specific objective. It's fun to play as a villain, too, because you can rob people and shit.
You may like some of the TSR roleplaying games. Eye of the Beholder 1, 2 and 3 are nice dungeon romps, as is Dungeon Hack, but if you want something more gothic you could look at their Ravenloft stuff. There are a large number of SSI games based on TSR properties that are very similar.
Some other stock RPGs are the Bard's Tale games, the Elder Scrolls games, Lands of Lore, and of course Ultima (they're top down, except for the Ultima Underworlds).
If you find a particular date of game that you like, then that's a good area to look around, because other games of the time will have comparable graphics and sound quality. |

| Actually, all of those games may be too old for you. What Might and Magic games were you talking about? The new ones that don't follow the story of Corak and Sheltem? |

OH! You should play Spelljammer: Pirates of Realmspace. Everyone makes fun of it for being bad, but it's somewhat neat that they thought to combine RPG with trading sim and whatever that space combat genre is called.

Hmmm. I remember playing this one Might & Magic game where you started off on like this tropical island with Lizard people who were in the midst of fighting a bunch of pirates. That was pretty sweet. I remember the graphics being kind of shitty then(I was like 7 years old) so I have no idea what they'll be like now. If it's fun, though, I'll definitely give it a chance.
The importing your characters things sounds cool. I could never get it to work in BG because of all the mods I used but I would like to one day take a character through the whole series.
Anyways, thanks for your recommendations. I'll try to check as many of them out as I can. |

| That's probably Might and Magic 6 or higher. You're very young, and I don't think I mentioned any specific games that were released after 1993. |

It's about breakthrough games, so that usually means that it should be the first in the genre that actually started anything.
Which I assume is why they have Wizardry instead of Ultima 0. |

I remember playing Wizardry for NES and getting my ass raped hard in like, the third or so floor.
This entire discussion about older computer games made me remember the time a neighbor had an Apple II. He had a bunch of games! Mario Bros., Sabotage, Bismarck, Oregon Trail, Labyrynth and some others. The one I recall the most was Deadline. It was very interesting, but since the game was a bootlegged copy, they didn't have the casebook and thus I couldn't get very far in it. :/ |
