I am not writing you an essay, Matthew.

But French Revolution = unhappiness of repressed people with government and societal system. Iranian Revolts = unhappiness of a repressed people with government and societal system.

Of course there are so many revolts and uprisings throughout world history it seems foolish to focus on only the French Revolution, but unlike other revolts I have studied (such as peasant revolts in China), the French Revolution was the first one that was fundamentally trying to change a government structure through mass uprisings (well, at least it was channeled in that direction). And that is what appears to be happening with those who are leading the protesters in Iran (and this because the government gave them no other choice if they are to survive).

I wonder if it would make more sense to compare the Iranian Revolution in 1979 to the first French Revolution, with the last 30 years being the Terror.

The only reason its being compared to the fRench revolution , is because you guys hear "revolution" and instantly think "french revolution".

This whole thing isnt even a revolution yet. Even if the protesters achieve their goals, they are not going to change the Islamic Republic of Iran into something new

Well, it is also compared to the French Revolution in that the protest is internal, against a domestically based, created, and supported government. This isn't like the uprisings in Europe at the end of the Cold War, which were puppet governments controlled and supported by the USSR.

The other big comparison is with the 1989 Chinese Revolts (Tienanmen Square), which were country-wide peaceful protests (until the Chinese government decided to crack down), as well as an internal power shift/grab (hardliners purged government of reformists).

When you make comparisons like these, it isn't to say that one thing is exactly like another. It is just to help get a grasp on what is going on and what it can mean. But Stefan is right, and I am being to presumptuous, to be making such resolute conjectures. Any comparative study should only be made after the situation is resolved and put into perspective.

But it is human nature to try to predict something or view it/parallel it to something known.

Ace, this reminds me of when you said "this deppression CLEARLY has more in common with 1879 than 1929" at which I pointed that doctrinal, if not catalytic reasons had more in common with the depression if anything. I was more offended by the fact that you didnt know jack shit about the depression (durr the price of crops went UP hurr)

I mean you may be right on both counts (and I may be wrong) but come on, make some salient fucking points instead of being the caricature MADali has of you

This is probably more analagous to 1848 than the FR

unlike the french revolution, in both Iran and 1848 there exists real precedent for challenging aristocracy (the french and american revolutions themselves were that precedent)

It is more analagous because it is rebellion against quasi-democracy and semi-democracy already in place

Revolting against the ruling party did not exactly unique or started with just the french revolution. I bet in caveman days, there would be tribes of 10 people, and the chief would be a dick, and the people would revolt against him.

You are all assholes. I was merely saying that if Iran continues this revolt, it could possibly have a comparable impact. I wasn't saying this is JUST LIKE the French Revolution or even saying it is remotely comparable AT THIS MOMENT. I was merely expressing my AWE at the determination of the Iranian people and hypothesizing how cool it would be if they continued on their current path and the situation ended up having a permanent effect on Middle Eastern culture.

And the hypothesis was a reaction to MADali saying that no matter what happens, this will breed a generation of Iranians who won't stand for injustice.

Ace obviously gets it. The rest of you are nitpicking bastards who can't allow anybody (especially not me) the slightest bit of intellectual freedom without flexing your FUCK YOU muscles.
This thread is about the Iranian uprising. Not silencing me. You are all too easily distracted by petty bullshit to apperciate anything. Your lives must be so boring and tediuous!

If you were in Iran right now, you'd be sitting on your lazy asses calling the protestors pretentious shit heads, and you know it.
