Outlaws of the Marsh/Water Margin/whatever |

I remember a thread on this long ago, but I finished it when I was in China. I guess only maybe Ace and Yogurtman will care about this thread, but discuss.
I had to re-read passages several times whenever the Black Whirlwind was involved because my brain couldn't believe the insane shit that it was processing. |

Unfortunately I must amend this to "only Ace will care". |

Did you not like it, or did you not read it? Fuck, I remember the thread being a decent length! |

Rice, do you know why this book has so many different titles?
I don't see why it's referred to as the Water Margin, Outlaws of the Marsh and All Men Are Brothers, since those don't really have the same meanings.
Anyway, I haven't read it, but I've been meaning to at some point. |

I would assume it was the decision of the respective versions' translators. At the academy there were these two guys from Montreal and they were reading a French version that was titled "On the Waterfront" or something similar.
The Chinese title, Shui Hu Zuan literally translates into something like "Water River Chronicle" or "Marsh Chronicle".
Unfortunately I have yet to read Romance of the Three Kingdoms so I can't make good comparisons but I think there are a lot of parallel characters. One of the generals is a descendant of Guan Yu! |

Three Kingdoms is better, but Water Margin is great. Aren't there like three or four stories where the lesson learned is that cheating wives should be punished by being murdered and their hearts eaten by vengeful husbands/relatives of husbands?
And several other chapters where the Black Whirlwind goes in and murders tons of innocent people with his axes, but no one can stay mad at him for too long because he's such an insane scamp?
The last few chapters sorta sucked (the longer ones where they are officially part of the army) because they spent half the time talking about what everyone was wearing. |

The thread was a decent length because the discussion was inside a Suikoden thread (that game being based on Water Margin). |

My version was called Thieves of the Marsh, but I believe the literal translation is Water Margin. There are also two or three official versions of the book to make it more confusing. |

I enjoyed the descriptions of the armies and their banners and armor and shit. That was cool!
I didn't, however, like how everyone all of a sudden fucking dies these horrible deaths for no reason after like 20 years of invincibly campaigning against the Emperor's forces. Ten Feet of Steel gets hit with a fucking brick!
It was also fucking gay how Gao Qiu and those assholes never got their comeuppance.
I don't know what the deal with the Black Whirlwind was though, seriously. Every time Li Kui said something silly after killing a bunch of innocent people I kept expecting Song Jiang to laugh towards the sky with his fists on his hips and then it going "THUNDA THUNDA THUNDA THUNDA CATS!" while the camera panned out. |
