Chris, I don't know what weird Japanese accent you're accustomed to dealing with, but none of my Japanese instructors ever used a D-ish sound when pronouncing any r/l syllable except for リュウ. Even when listening to Japanese DBZ, I don't hear it.

I tried to take Japanese I twice and ended up withdrawing from the class both times, the first time because it was too hard and the second time because I skipped too many classes and was gonna fail because of my (extremely sexy) sensei's insane attendance policy.

The best thing I got out of the class was that the Japanese pronounce McDonalds like MAKUDONARUDO. Hahahaha! I just imagine Japanese tourists with cameras around their necks and weird shit hanging from their cell phones walking around America like "Ano eto ekusukuyuzu me, do yuu know weeah da nearesto MAKUDONARUDO eezu?" and it's just a great feeling to know that that has probably happened.
