The second isn't all bad, it's just linear and if you get the timing down the shell kick combo obliterates basically everything. I did see playable Bowser, though. And the less baby versions of the characters in a Mario game is generally an indication of its overall quality.

Well the first game has a constant stream of more adult humor in particular jokes about Luigi's sexuality. The second game is just jokes about the unbearable baby characters over and over again, and clearly lacked the broader appeal of the first game. Also, the items weren't as interesting as the Bros. Attacks in the first game.
