The study of martial arts is a form of philosophy. The choice of fighting style, or fist, hardens the fighter against some attacks while inevitably opening up certain weaknesses. Amazingly, two of the most powerful fists in the world, hokuto shinken and nanto seiken, are based off of entirely divergent and even arguably antithetical philosophies, yet are comparable in strength. I will attempt to dissect each style briefly in order to compare the strengths and weaknesses of each.
On the surface, the most obvious distinctions are clear. Hokuto shinken (divine fist of the north star) is a deadly art emphasizing precision strikes to pressure points called tsubo on the enemy’s body. These tsubo are gateways to the opponent’s autonomic nervous system; certain attacks can force the victim’s body to move in ways that the victim does not want, and other techniques can force his body to literally tear itself apart. In this sense, hokuto shinken destroys the enemy’s body from within; nanto seiken (fist of the southern stars), in contrast, relies on the more basic notion of destroying the body from without. There are 108 schools under the nanto umbrella; even within the five schools of the nanto rokusei ken, represented by the stars of the southern cross (not counting the compassionate mother star, which has no fist associated with it), there is considerable speciation of style. For the sake of simplicity, the term nanto seiken hereinafter refers to the five fists of the nanto rokusei ken. To sum up these fists, it is fair to say that nanto relies on destroying the enemy by slicing or piercing using the practitioner’s own limbs as razor sharp knives. This is the most basic distinction: nanto strikes from the outside, hokuto from the inside.
At first blush, neither style is clearly superior. Throughout the two thousand year history of both fists, battles have been won and lost by even the greatest practitioners of each. Nevertheless, the disparities in philosophy, form, and execution between the fists invite comparison. For each art, the training is grueling and begins in childhood. Only the fighters with the most potential can be chosen as successor to the fist: both fists agree on this, but their methods of achieving this end are different. In hokuto, the current successor becomes a sensei by adopting several boys as his sons and teaching them the style. The bodies and minds of the young ones are trained alike until they have all completed their education. At that point, the sensei has observed all his sons, and can test them further in order to settle his mind on which one can be successor. The other sons who are not chosen are forced to abandon their fist; if they do not do so willingly, their fists are sealed or their memories erased. This is something of a buffer against miscalculations that the sensei may make in choosing a pupil. Nanto seiken does not have this redundancy: the details vary from school to school, but in general, the current master chooses one pupil and teaches no one else. Which system is better overall is up for debate, but I believe the succession law of hokuto shinken is preferable. Although it’s true that students of nanto receive 100% of their sensei’s attention, it also means that the student has no peers to spar with. Combined with the issue of redundancy, this is a serious flaw in the method by which succession takes place.
Hokuto shinken is known for its use of ki blasts to strike the enemy from a distance; some warriors have been known to destroy solid stone without touching it using nothing but ki. In fact, one of hokuto’s most powerful ultimate attacks, tenha kassatsu, relies on the use of ultra-precise ki blasts to strike the opponent’s tsubo as though he were within striking distance. Nanto seiken is not known to use ki whatsoever, but that is not to say that nanto fighters are incapable of striking from a distance. Certain nanto fists, including nanto suicho ken (nanto waterfowl fist), nanto kokako ken (nanto red crane fist), and nanto hoo ken (nanto phoenix fist) use the air itself to create blades which can strike at a distance. This does not involve the use of ki, but rather precision hand movements combined with immense speed to create an unblockable shockwave of moving air which can bisect an enemy before he realizes he’s been hit.
Hokuto shinken can be defeated, at least in the short term, by stumbling blocks that are not an issue for nanto seiken. Suppose the enemy’s tsubo are cushioned by fat; it may be difficult or impossible to hit them with sufficient force while maintaining precision. Nanto seiken will slice through the fat easily and defeat the enemy. An adversary born with his tsubo inverted (there are asymmetries in the nerve endings which hokuto relies on) may find himself immune to the attacks of hokuto shinken. A user of nanto seiken does not use the tsubo, and needs never know whether his opponent’s body is reversed except as it pertains to critical strikes to blood vessels and internal organs. An opponent may use powerful flows of ki to distort space and move the opponent’s hand before it strikes; without the ability to execute pinpoint strikes, hokuto is stopped cold, while nanto attacks are only moved a few inches at most, usually not enough to make a difference. In all of these cases, hokuto is defeated, but nanto is unfazed. A sufficiently clever and powerful master of hokuto is likely to overcome these hurdles, but this is certainly an advantage for nanto.
Finally, compare the ultimate attack of nanto hoo ken, the most powerful style of nanto, against the ultimate attack of hokuto shinken. Nanto seiken’s ultimate technique, tensho juji ho, “transforms [the practitioner] into a feather,” allowing him to fly and pass through solid material while continuing to deliver damage. This is similar to the ultimate attack of hokuto shinken, muso tensei, which likewise allows the user to pass through solid matter while continuing to attack. Neither grants total impunity from attacks from a sufficiently fast opponent, and in both cases users of the technique have been defeated and killed. Although on paper they are nearly identical, muso tensei is clearly more effective than tensho juji ho. The former relies on rebirth from nothingness, and can only be learned by the greatest masters who truly understand sadness. Furthermore, the ultimate technique of nanto simply lacks the speed and power to defeat hokuto shinken. It can be defeated without the need to reveal muso tensei as a counterattack.
In spite of what may appear to be failings of hokuto, I believe it is clear that hokuto shinken is superior to nanto seiken. In addition to the points outlined above, consider the ability of hokuto shinken to master an opponent’s fist in only one fight. This ability is perhaps most powerful of all; no matter what style you use against him, a user of hokuto shinken will understand all your techniques by the end of the fight. In light of this, and the other attributes I have compared, I find it reasonable to declare hokuto shinken the superior art.
