Sword-Wielding Man Invades Gas Station
KTLA News

Sword-Wielding Man Invades Gas Station STOCKTON -- A 20-year-old man burst into a north Stockton convenience store brandishing a homemade sword Saturday morning. After several attempts, police were able to take Thomas Neil into custody without serious injury.
According to a police report, officers were called around 8 a.m. to Chevron, at 3355 E. Hammer Lane, on a report of a man threatening customers with a stick. When officers arrived, they saw Neel wielding a 5-foot-long homemade sword. He seemed to be welcoming a violent confrontation. Police say Neil shouted at officers "shoot me" and "I want blood!"
Police made three attempts to stop Neil with a stun gun but to no avail. An officer then shot Neil with non-lethal rounds. "it's like being hit by a major league fastball at about 90 miles per hour," said officer Pete Smith of the Stockton Police Department.
Neil fell to the floor, and officers, including a K-9 unit, swarmed him. Neil will be charged with assault with a deadly weapon.
In early July, police said, Neil invaded the same gas station and threatened to kill employees with a railroad spike.
He is being held in lieu of $559,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. |

Man with rifle and 10lbs of pot caught driving over 90mph while taping himself masturbating
Father of three Brendon Alan Erhardt, 39, told the court he was masturbating before being pulled over by police for driving over 90mph and recording himself on video as well. He told the court he was "not dangerous" and was the only one at risk.
In the car was a loaded .22 rifle, a cooler in the trunk containing over 10 pounds of cannabis, drug pipes, and a back seat with cannabis plants on it. The "visibly agitated" Erhardt said he planned on smoking it all at home in Noonamah, Australia.
He said the drugs were found at a rest stop, and that the rifle was for shooting kangaroos as he drove. |

A Louisiana grand jury indicted a former police officer on a manslaughter charge in the death of a man who was Tasered nine times while handcuffed, prosecutors said Wednesday.
Scott Nugent also was charged with felony criminal malfeasance in connection with the January death of Baron "Scooter" Pikes.
Pikes, a 21-year-old sawmill worker, tried to run from Winnfield police, who wanted to arrest him on a warrant charging him with cocaine possession.
A coroner's report found that Pikes was handcuffed and on the ground when first stunned with a Taser and might have been dead before the last two 50,000-volt shocks were delivered.
Nugent, who authorities said was the arresting officer, was suspended and ultimately fired in May.
If convicted, Nugent could get up to 40 years for the manslaughter charge and five years for the criminal malfeasance charge, Winn Parish District Attorney R. Chris Nevils said.
"It is our intention to show at trial that Mr. Nugent caused the death of Baron Pikes by Tasing him multiple times, unnecessarily and in violation of Louisiana law, and by failing to get him medical attention when it was apparent he needed it," Nevils said.
The indictment stems from a state police investigation into the death, which ended in late July.
Nugent's attorney, Phillip Terrell, could not be immediately reached for comment Wednesday evening. He said earlier that his client had followed proper police procedure.
A copy of the Winnfield Police Department's Taser training manual, obtained by CNN, says the device "shall only be deployed in circumstances where it is deemed reasonably necessary to control a dangerous or violent subject." |

LAVONIA, Georgia (CNN) -- A Georgia man is accused of holding his wife and children captive in a trash-filled mobile home for three years, police said Wednesday.
Raymond Daniel Thurmond, 36, was arrested after police got a call from a woman at a local shelter August 4, Lavonia Police Lt. Missy Collins said.
"She told me they had a mother and four kids and apparently they've been kept at home and there was some abuse allegations and the dad wouldn't let them leave," Collins said.
Collins said police were told that the family had been at the shelter for five or six days.
When police got to the mobile home where the family was said to be kept, the conditions were so bad, Collins had to immediately run behind an adjacent trailer to vomit, she said. Another officer had to put on a gas mask, she said.
"You couldn't breathe," Collins said. "I have never in my life smelled anything like that."
During the three years they were locked inside the mobile home, the family was allowed out only once: to visit Thurmond's wife's family in North Carolina, Collins said. The 9-, 12- and 13-year-olds never went to school, police said, but the oldest, a 14-year-old boy, might have attended the second grade.
Thurmond, who has no criminal record, was charged with one count of rape, four counts of cruelty to children in the first degree and five counts of false imprisonment. He is being held in the Franklin County Jail.
Thurmond asked for a lawyer but hadn't been assigned one as of Wednesday afternoon, according to The Associated Press.
Police said they believe that Thurmond used intimidation to keep the family inside the home in northeast Georgia, about a mile from I-85.
A CNN reporter saw signs of a hasp commonly used with a padlock outside the children's bedroom and also on the front door. Another hasp was attached to the outside of the back door. Police said they were investigating whether padlocks were used to keep the family inside.
Alma Medina, the property manager for the Beaver Creek mobile home park, lived three doors away from the family for the past 2½ years. Medina said Thurmond was late paying his rent but was very respectful.
"A very nice guy, very quiet," she said. "He never bothered nobody."
Medina said she put a note on Thurmond's door this month to pay the late rent by August 5. On August 6, after no rent was received, she sent her maintenance man to the 3-bed, 2-bath trailer. He opened the door and came straight back, she said.
"I want you to see this with your own eyes," she recalled the maintenance worker saying to her. "You better wear some shoes and gloves or something,"
Medina went in the trailer and found piles of trash everywhere: 4, 5 or 6 feet high, she said.
Medina shot a video of the trash inside the trailer, including Diet Mountain Dew bottles, board games, cigarette boxes, frozen pizza boxes and piles of human hair on the kitchen floor. The laundry room was filled to the ceiling with trash, Medina said.
"You cannot describe the smell," she said. "It was so strong it would knock you out."
After Thurmond's arrest, the trailer was cleaned out, but yellow jackets swarmed around a Dumpster full of trash -- including a stroller, car seat and toys -- from the trailer. A horrible stench still lingers. Anthills remain under a mattress in the master bedroom, maggots creep around the trailer, and roaches roam inside the fridge.
"You cannot imagine someone lives, sleeps like that," Medina said.
Thurmond's wife told police she wasn't allowed to clean, police said. |

A man in the US state of Texas has been arrested for allegedly trying to cash a cheque for $360bn.
Charles Ray Fuller had said he wanted to start a record business, authorities in the state said.
The 21-year-old’s attempt to cash the money in a bank in Fort Worth failed when staff spotted the 10 zeros on the personal cheque.
Mr Fuller was arrested on a charge of forgery and was released on bail of $3,750.
$1m scams
The man from North Texas said he had been given the cheque by his girlfriend’s mother.
The bank said it had contacted the account owner and had been told she had not given Mr Fuller permission to either take or cash the cheque.
Fort Worth police said Mr Fuller also faced charges of unlawfully carrying a weapon and possessing cannabis.
Officers said a small amount of cannabis and a .25-calibre pistol were found in his pocket.
In October last year a man in the city of Pittsburgh was arrested after he handed over a counterfeit $1m bill to a cashier at a supermarket and asked for change.
Three years earlier a woman was arrested after trying to use a fake $1m bill at a supermarket in Georgia. |

PATERSON, New Jersey (AP) — Daisy Valdivia is annoyed that someone stole her backyard pool — and baffled at how they did it without leaving behind a splash, drip or trace of the 1,000 gallons of water it contained.
Valdivia awoke to find her family’s hip-high, inflatable, 10-foot diameter swimming pool gone from her back yard Wednesday.
Valdivia told The Record of Bergen County the theft must have occurred between 1 a.m., when her husband went to bed, and 5 a.m., when she awoke.
She’s amazed someone could steal the pool that quickly and just wanted to know “what the heck they did with the water,” she said.
Valdivia told The Herald News of Passaic County that she was surprised the thieves chose the pool to steal.
“We have two grills, chairs, umbrellas, they’re much easier to take,” she told the paper” |
