Chris, like most people, probably conflates string theory and What The Bleep and Imagining The Tenth Dimension with actual mainstream science because it's easier.

Everyone should learn string theory, because it's interesting and those guys probably are onto SOMETHING, but it's like nails on a chalkboard to hear people say "oh yeah, the Uncertainty Principle, that's string theory, right? Isn't that stuff all unproven?"

Actually, string theorists are kind of like Ron Paul supporters in their cultiness and dogma. However, unlike Ron Paul supporters, if you average them all together they're probably right on some things.
