For one thing some of his information is facutally wrong (large power plants are more efficient than small ones). And for another, he doesn't realize that the purpose of hydrogen is to act as an energy storage system, instead of an energy source. The idea is that once you have a transparent storage medium (ie. a battery or hydrogen), you can use any sort of power plant to generate the energy you need, and that reduces to the problem to one that is much, much simpler to solve.

What he did was akin to creationists attacking evolution for not explaining abiogenesis.

If I thought we could count on energy that is by any measure "good" coming out of the wall socket, hydrogen would be a neat idea. Some amount of energy comes out of the power lines, it becomes molecular hydrogen, that gets shipped to a fueling station, and then maybe half or 75% of the original energy (hopefully not less) comes out in a useful form. All the burden of producing energy, controlling pollution, etc. is centralized with the power companies.

Only, this would be a monstrous increase in electrical draw, and I don't know of any US presidential candidates who want to deal with that. Kucinich opposes coal and gas power, but he also opposes fission (they're atoms! God! If you don't understand what's wrong/dangerous/unclean about that without having it explained then I just don't know what to say to you!), so I don't actually have any knowledge of a realistic plan to make that possible.

Hydrogen is for rich Oregonians.

If you're generating unused power during off times then you can use that energy to create the hydrogen. This is especially useful for most of the renewable energy sources (like hydroelectric).

Do coal and nuclear plants reduce their output at night? I would guess that the nuclear reactor is kept at a constant output, but that's just a guess.
