CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) -- Evel Knievel is dead.

That sentence probably should have been written in 1968, when Knievel crashed his motorcycle spectacularly as he jumped the fountains at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas and wound up in a coma.

It probably should have been written in 1974, when his rocket-powered cycle failed as he tried to jump the Snake River Canyon and he almost landed in the raging water. Or the numerous other times when, while trying to jump something bigger than ever, he splattered.

Instead, it was written Friday. Natural causes. Age 69.

"It's been coming for years, but you just don't expect it. Superman just doesn't die, right?" said longtime friend and promoter Billy Rundle. He's the organizer of the annual Evel Knievel Days festival in the daredevil's Butte, Mont., hometown. "I lost a good friend and a guy who was like a father to me. I'm just glad he doesn't have to suffer anymore."

Because really, people in their late 20s are at the optimal age for remembering/appreciating Mr. T.

It's more of an ironic occurrence. The guy was always tempting suicide trying to impress a crowd, and he dies of old age and none of you care.

Well when was the last time he tempted suicide? I think this "ironic occurrence" has been visible and inevitable since, I dunno, Evel Knievel stopped being a daredevil? Which was 30 years ago.

Apparently his album is very good.

Its kind of incredible how insane religious things constantly happen with muslims and moderate muslims go, "welll...thats not really the CORRECT way" and westerns get fooled.

The moderate muslims are morons. Its the moderates that are responsible for the fundamentalists. If there were no moderates, the extremists would have a harder time selling their religion.

I agree that a person under 35 reacting to a mention of Evel Knievel with "Oh my GOD, I COMPLETELY forgot about him!!" would be grotesque and infuriating, but he actually deserves cult status much more than, for instance, Mr. T. Check out his wikipedia!

He's one of the worst people who ever lived!

While Knievel was healing from his latest round of injuries, the book Evel Knievel on Tour was released. Authored by Knievel's promoter for the Snake River Canyon jump, Sheldon Saltman, the book painted a less than perfect picture of Knievel's character and alleged that he abused his wife and kids and that he used drugs. Knievel, with both arms still in casts, flew to California to confront Saltman, a VP at Twentieth Century Fox. Outside the studio commissary, one of Knievel's friends grabbed Shelly and held him, while Knievel attacked him with an aluminum baseball bat, declaring, "I'm going to kill you!" According to a witness to the attack, Knievel struck repeated blows at Saltman's head, with Saltman blocking the blows with his left arm. Saltman's arm and wrist were shattered in several places before he fell to the ground unconscious.
