You should probably read The Lord of the Rings before the Silmarillion; the Silmarillion is written like the Bible and is really targeted at extreme nerds. Don't get me wrong, it is awesome, but then again I am an extreme nerd.
I liked the first two Earthsea books but after that I think they dropped off pretty badly. |

The Silmarillion is actually good and the Lord of the Rings is not. _________________ @}-,-'- *~*~* Member of the FTU Elegant Tea Party Society *~*~* -'-,-{@ |

The Silmarillion is superior to anything else he's written, but you should read The Lord of the Rings first to get used to his style. It only gets drier as you get to his unfinished and more obscure stuff. |

I need to actually read the Lord of the Rings so that I'll be able to say with qualification that it's the most boring, overrated, tiresomely, eye-rollingly venerated thing of the 20th century. |

Reply so that when you edit your post to say "without qualification" and make sense it has an "Edited by" tag. |

Oh, but I actually have The Silmarillion already, and I'd have to buy LotR, so that's a big factor. _________________ Said the Captain PUNisher. |

No, I meant with qualification, as in, "I will be able to back up my opinion with the proper qualification." |

Also, your tone! ... a nerve... has been touched...
Perhaps I should have rephrased my statements more diplomatically around an admin!
One does not simply walk into Mordor. |

Ah. I of course assumed you meant that you would be able to rip on it without qualifying your statement with "I never read it, BUT..."
And come on, you know I have to stick up for Lord of the Rings. |

It really is the most boring shit ever. I couldn't even finish the first book because it was just a bunch of faggots walking and singing. |

I think it's definitely harder to read the books if you've seen the movies first because at least shit looks cool in the movies and there's a stirring soundtrack and whatever while you see them walk around. I'm glad I read them, though. The gayness between Sam and Frodo is very excellent and you definitely feel IMMERSED in a fully realized magic world where there are monsters and people smoke stuff in long pipes. |

When the characters smoked drugs from a pipe, it made a personal connection with me and gave me something to identify with. I don't know if you've ever done a drug pipe before, but you typically drift into fantasies about being a wizard who's relaxing, which I found the books evoked, poignantly. |

I realize that this is so 2007 and everything, but I was thinking about Achewood, and I don't know if we ever compared posters here to character from it. I don't know, the only two I have are that Theldorin is Pat and Gimp Mask is Todd.
I haven't read the strip since about when Little Nephew was in Wales in the past. How is it still? Is it worth catching up on? _________________ Said the Captain PUNisher. |
