Rust literally gave me a panic attack because I've been thinking a lot about the shit he says, regarding death and love and humanity. Depression is nasty.

I was a lot more satisfied by the conclusion than most of the internet seems to be. If anything I think they should have apprehended even less of the culprits and gone full-on Chinatown.

I didn't start watching until right around episode 7 aired so I didn't have to stew between weeks trying to guess where the show was headed but apparently a large contingent of the fans thought that there actually was a supernatural evil at play and the final episode would deal with a Cthulu-type god summoned to this plane by all the kid fucking and killing.

I really never expected any sort of conspiracy outside the Church/government dirty dealings they revealed pretty early on so that would have been a pretty silly tonal shift. Then again, I didn't see the Eclipse coming and that was pretty amazing.

Yeah I rewatched the show up to episode 6 in between waiting for new episodes and I can't say the ending was an awful surprise, although it WAS pretty surprising in a non-awful way.

It would be funny if the next season had terrible ratings because people didn't get Cthulu this time.

I hope each season of True Detective revolves around an occult murder/illicit fuck conspiracy that seems unrelated on the surface to the other seasons but around season 5 the hero is looking at a corkboard covered in photos of suspects and all the lines converge at the top on a picture of Cthulu.

I doubt they'll be able to structure the next seasons like this one---which is probably a good thing. The flashbacks were great, but if its overdone, shit turns into Lost---meaning, it depends too much on the format and less on quality storytelling.

Anyway, I was wishing it had ended more insanely. They need to push that element, more, going forward. Otherwise, the only thing it really has going for it is Rust. Which, also, isn't a bad thing.

Rust and Marty aren't going to be in the next season. They're doing an anthology format like American Horror Story. Next season will be about the secret occult history of the Southern California transit system and will apparently have female protagonists.

If they are doing an anthology series, than that excuse that Marty gives the head of CID makes sense. I imagine that each season is basically a different true crime novel, and things are only linked thematically.

I'd really like to see more of these characters, though. I hope this isn't the end of Marty and Rust's adventures.
