Post     Four in the cooch.

I finally specced out my future computer. Here is a list of parts I shall be purchasing next week. I'm about 60 dollars under my projected budget so if you find anything better let me know!

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor - $164.99

G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Memory - $67.98

SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 3870 100225L Video Card - $94.99

Rosewill TU-155 II 500 Black Computer Case (I'd prefer a case with the USB ports on top) - $69.99

ASUS P5Q Pro ATX Intel Motherboard - $124.99

LG 22X DVD±R DVD Burner Black SATA Model GH22NS30 (x2) - $49.98

Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB 3.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - $69.99

Did you get a power supply? I wouldn't trust whatever comes with the case. I also hope you got a fan for the CPU.

I added some coolant gel/sealant to go between the fan and the CPU when I built my rig, and its worked well keeping temperatures down. Cost $10, so its something to think about.

I'm sure you matched the motherboard to the CPU and memory, but you should check if you didn't. I mistakenly got a MB that wasn't DDRM2 or 3 compatible, so I am stuck with DDRM1 until I upgrade the board.

I guess I'll look into getting a power supply, I was going to rely on the one that came stock with the case. The CPU comes with a heat sink and fan, wouldn't getting another bit redundant?

Yeah I matched all the parts, hopefully everything ends up being compatible.

Currently the price for all of the computer parts, monitor, speakers, keyboard and mouse is 840 which includes shipping.

I think that is almost the exact same system that I got, except with less RAM and a larger disk drive.

(and a different case and motherboard, of course)

The case comes with a PSU?

Also, we can't spec things that are cheaper without knowing what you're spending.

Theldorrin, could I get this exact set up with a bunch of memory upgrades for use as a digital recording studio?

Probably. Computer technology has become so insane that it's really difficult to make a computer that isn't suitable for almost every task.

I took the lazy route and got a Macintosh.

I'm burning through memory pretty quickly, so I might have to look into a new investment soon, and I could definitely pirate Pro Tools with a PC instead of having to work with preschool Garage Band.

There's the prices. I didn't bother adding the prices for the speakers and other things, they don't matter all that much. I guess the appearance of the case isn't all that important, but I would prefer something a prettier!

Do you know how large the power supply unit is that comes with the case? I don't remember what I had anymore, but within a year it burned out and I had to replace it with a more powerful unit. So, that's why I advise you to look into upgrading the PSU.

The power supply is a 500 watt. Guess I'll just get a 1000 watt, just to play it safe.

Don't get too carried away. I don't know what the best would be for your computer, but if you go larger, go 750 instead of 1000. You know that the more power you use, the higher your electricity bill.

Yeah, I won't have to worry about that in a few months though. My utilities will be covered in the rent when I move out.

It's very unlikely that you'd even need 500 Watts. The main risk with PSUs is that most of them suck and will cause damage to your system, or don't provide the output that they have on their label (so a 500W may only output 350W, for example).

That website estimated I'd only need roughly 309w.

The fan that comes with the CPU will be sufficient if you don't plan to overclock. There's no need to buy anything fancy.

I'm sorry if somebody already said that!

You could probably spend a tad more on the graphics card and get something quite a bit nicer.

See if you can grab a 4850 (ati) or a 9800 (nvidia)!

Look at these two motherboards:

This is the one I got.

If you're interested in SLI shit (running two video cards), you might want to think about this one:

They're both really really good and stable and about the same price as yours.

I linked this to you earlier, and you really should look at it, Calvin!

It has an excellent and easy to understand section on PSUs that you should read! Just scroll down!
