I don't know how common this is (it's REALLY uncommon in Louisiana), but my seventh grade English teacher really drove sentence diagramming into our heads.

So when we all had to mimmick the syntax of a poem, and during workshop I was like, "We need a prepositional phrase right here, not a subordinate clause," everybody in the class, including the professor, was like *jaws drop*
