So, what the hell could be causing this, and how can I possibly fix it?

Whenever I start up my computer, the icons on the quick launch bar always look like this, or some other combination of weird, foreign pictures:





I have no idea what those icons are supposed to be, let alone why the fuck they're there in the first place. The buttons work as intended when clicked, but clicking them doesn't change how they look. However, clicking the little sideways arrows to expand the menu will change the icon pictures back to normal, and they'll usually stay normal until I restart my computer again.



Any ideas?

I recommend living with your new icons or ignoring them.

I remember when I used to have WoW on my quicklaunch bar.

anyways try deleting them all and replacing them that should be an easy fix maybe your video card is fucked but just icons make it seem odd or you have some intense new virus.

I'm assuming you're running Windows XP. Anyway, you can download Tweak UI and it should have an option to rebuild your icon cache.

You may be able to have it rebuild your icon cache by changing your colour depth, too.

I think the real question is where the fuck is the computer getting these random images?

Is that a grey palm tree or something? And then a bear's face?

This is all speculation, since I'm not sure how the icon cache works exactly, but this may be a reasonable approximation.

Do you understand the nature of caching? Things are cached, generally, in order to improve performance. So for the icons of things that are on your desktop and your quick launch, it will store the icons in a special file. That way when the system boots, it can just look in that one file rather than looking in the 10 or so files that correspond to all of your desktop and quick launch icons (in my case it'd be closer to 50 files or whatever). It's possible that a ton of start menu stuff is also cached in that.

At some point your icon cache was corrupted. This could have been caused by a ton of things, since it's just a file and can be just as easily messed up as any other file. Maybe a few bytes were fiddled around so that icons were pointing to other icons, or the icon coloursets were messed up. So you could have malware that did it, or your computer could have had a system error in the midst of modifying the cache, or a hardware failure. Or else Windows itself has a bug that occurs when something somewhat normal happens.

Now presumably when you click on the arrow, it's reloading the images from their proper image location, instead of the image cache. And the Tweak UI rebuilds the image cache from scratch.
