That's because they tend to just take computer games and move them to the console.
Are they (fighting games) even in the top 10 in terms of genres? |

Puzzles, Sims, RPGs and Platformers are all more popular in terms of number of games made, as well as overall sales.
Then there are racing games and sports games, which are probably also more popular.
And you yourself mentioned FPSes, although I'm not so certain they're more popular than fighting games either.
And let's completely ignore games that are just computerized versions of board and card games, because that makes things too complicated. |

* Console and portable software sales: $6.2 billion, up 8% from 2003[5]
* Console and portable hardware and accessory sales: $3.7 billion, down 35% from 2003[5]
* PC game sales: $1.1 billion, down 15% from 2006[6]

I agree that sales arent everything but you can dismiss consoles so easily |

Thel, you just raped your own argument about RPGS. And no, I doubt Baldurs Gate or Diablo make the entire RPG market
Not to mention about consoles, considering platformers |

How are FPSes not more popular fighting games? They are SADLY one of the most popular genres.
Of course, you're Theldorrin, so I imagine you're factoring in the popularity of cell phone Mahjong and shit like that.
Fighting games used to be a very important genre, ESPECIALLY IN JAPAN, but aren't so much any more since they are ultimately reliant on arcades. |

The best selling fighting game of all time is probably Street Fighter II. And for the SNES, it had sales of ~ 6 million.
The best selling FPSes of all time are Goldeneye, Halo 2 and Half-Life all with ~ 8 million in sales.
Meanwhile there have been over 155 million Pokemon games sold. |

Fighting games don't thrive on consoles and never had. Virtua Fighter 5 REAPS the fucking BIG BUCKS in Japan and it sold like 40,000 on its launch (which sucks) only because there was no point in buying it since people would rather spend their money playing it at the arcades. |

And your figures for SF2 don't sound right at all. Of course, I'm sure it's extremely diluted what with the 8 or 9 pseudo-sequels it had. |

The point of the above post was to point out that there'd have to be about 20 games all as popular as the most popular game in their genre to compete just with one brand, and most of the other genres are bigger than that.
It's difficult to compare numbers for fighting games and FPSes, too. On the face, FPSes have better sales numbers, but then fighting games have a lot of hidden numbers. For example, fighting games were around before recording of sales numbers was very common for computer games. And they also have a lot of arcade influence, whereas there are probably not a lot of FPS arcade games. |

I was only counting vanilla Street Fighter 2.
All of the Street Fighter games combined is apparently 25 million, and it's the most popular fighter. Followed by Mortal Kombat, with 20 million.
You can see Capcom sales data here.

Only 5 million more than MK? Doesnt sound right, even with the head start sega had. Plus, arcade.
Regardless, virtually ever fighter to this day is a SF clone. This makes it much more influential than MK, despite only 25 percent more sales |

Your sources are bullshit.
There's no way fucking Goldeneye sold more units than SF2. |

If I had to give up either Street Fighter 2 or Goldeneye permanently, I'd probably crucify myself because they are both crucial.
These lists are never meaningful to me because I'm not up on my 3DO games from 14 years ago. |

I HATE TO REPEAT MYSELF, but the list is about conceptual importance, not actual importance.
Obviously I wouldn't consider Sensible World of Soccer more important that Super Fucking Mario Bros., and neither would these nerds.
That's why they had to explain themselves!
Though they should have done so a little more clearly.
Still, Wolfenstein before Doom. |

It might be Doom because it supports multiplayer. |
