Post     10 Most Important Videogames of All Time

Article

Here's their list:

Spacewar! (1962), Star Raiders (1979), Zork (1980), Tetris (1985), SimCity (1989), Super Mario Bros. 3 (1990), Civilization I/II (1991), Doom (1993), Warcraft series (beginning 1994) and Sensible World of Soccer (1994)

I don't really agree with it, though. Wolfenstein 3D should be switched in for Doom, for example. And certainly Adventure for Zork, as well. And probably Herzog Zwei for Warcraft.

I don't really agree with a bunch of the others, either, but I'm not sure about a perfect replacement for them.

Discuss.

If Rolling Stone wrote an article about the ten most important albums of all time, it would not be credible enough for me to even bring it up in conversation.

How about Super Mario Bros. 1 instead of 3? I mean, obviously 3 sold more copies, but 1 is the reason everyone bought a Nintendo in the first place.

What is Sensible World of Soccer? Did it invent the idea of carrying over a team from season to season? Is there any reason it shouldn't be replaced with the original Madden or some other older sports game?

Yogurtman said pretty much exactly what I was going to say so I guess I'll just add that that list is fucking gay.

Also, uh, shouldn't it include Pong?

"selected Super Mario Bros. 3, said the game was important for its nonlinear play, a mainstay of contemporary games, and new features like the ability to move both backward and forward."

Which is why I didn't mention Mario Bros. 1. Although to be honest, I don't think it' really embodies the traits he claims, anyway.

I wanted to replace SimCity with MULE, but they mentioned SimCity because it didn't have an ending, and I guess that is pretty noteworthy.

I don't know what's special about Senisble Soccer. I've never heard of it before today, and nothing on Wikipedia really gives me any info that it would be worthy of this list.

Pong is important only for business reasons and not cultural ones.

Since Spacewar! precedes it by quite a bit.

I looked it up on Wikipedia and basically yeah, Sensible World of Soccer was the first sports game with a franchise/career type mode.

It was for the Amiga, though. Doesn't that automatically render it unimportant since presumably only nine people played it?

Also, re: Mario 1 vs 3, I think the influence of Mario 1 carrying the Nintendo and video games in general to unprecedented popularity is more impactful than Mario 3 allowing you to walk backwards. But that's just me!

Are they talking about backwards on the World Map?

I guess I am thinking of things that were turning points for the industry itself, while they are trying to focus on things that were major turning points in game mechanics/concepts.

There must have been many Europeans involved in making this list.

I was thinking of MULE as well.

And as much as I hate it, Myst is pretty damn important.

I'm not sure I understand the inclusion of Warcraft (Beyond the obvious).

The introduction of real time strategy overlaid on a narrative?

I don't think so.

I don't really know what franchise play means, Yogurtman.

I played a baseball game where you could create a custom team of players much earlier than 1994 (which was when the soccer game they listed was released).

It's when you play through the season with your custom team, and then manage the offseason stuff and sign/draft new players and such, and then play the next season. And then it continues for a bunch of seasons.

Yeah, Narrative + RTS is a stupid combo. You might as well say that combo with any game style warrants inclusion, then.

That's why I mentioned Herzog Zwei as a replacement, but I'm thinking that the Ancient Art of War may have been a better option still.

And by that logic they should just include the first game to actually have a narrative or the first game to include human characters.

What a stupid list!

Also, Fire Emblem is turn-based strategy and I'm stupid.

I don't know if that baseball game did that sort of thing. It really wasn't worth playing more than a game or two.
