Barack Obama, in his completely unnecessary attempt to prove he's thousands of times smarter than Bush, has let himself be photographed carrying a book of poetry by the Caribbean writer Derek Walcott.

Derek Walcott has also written a poem about Obama since the election called "40 Acres."

There is talk about Walcott possibly being Obama's Inaugural poet.

This is all really exciting to me because I'm taking a black literature class with the Yoruba poet Niyi Osundare, and we studied one of Derek Walcott's plays, and Osundare has met Walcott numerous times, and they're like tight probably.

I'm sure Chris Psaros will be quick to remind everybody not to care about stuff like this, but I thought I'd share it since I'm usually very negative, and it puts me in a genuinely good mood to see a writer I'm studying in school actually have some legitimate, contemporary importance. My school is one step away from a tech school, and Osundare's presence (and he's obviously there because he thinks New Orleans should self-identify with the Caribbean moreso than the United States) is really the only thing that makes it cool to study English there, and now this makes it even cooler.

Also, the Walcott play that we studied, Dream on Monkey Mountain, is very good in many FTU-esque ways. And by that I mean it contains extensive use of the word "nigger" with a sneering twelve-year-old level of maturity, and THAT'S THE JOKE and everything.
