Forrest is not someone who it would have occurred to me to put on there. He was good, obviously, but he was a brigade level guy for most of the war.

Also I don't know that much about George Thomas due to his not being in the Virginia theater.

Other than that this is a pretty good list! I mean, yeah, General Lee riding into the clearing at Chancellorsville while the Army of Northern Virginia cheers insanely is probably the highest pinnacle any American general has ever reached, but on the other hand that led to overconfidence and Gettysburg. Sheridan and Sherman never failed at much of anything.

The Civil War is the best.

Chancellorsville was as much the work of Jackson as it was Lee; Lee and Jackson (and Longstreet) together may have made a napoleon but Lee alone wasn't, and I think his lack of offfensive victories substantiates this theory.

Not to mention his early small scale losses against Mclellan, and of course his decline after Chancellorsville.

I don't think Lee even really picked Jackson or Longstreet; he couldn't replace the former. Contrast to Grant who helped bring Sherman and Sheridan up.

Lee was a better general than Grant (as was demonstrated as Cold Harbor) but both thought each other over-rated and I think both were right.

Pickett's Charge was the worst thing ever, and Lee was amazingly overconfident.

He should have listened to Longstreet!

Well, Grant had to bring Sherman and Sheridan up because he had to replace a bunch of dipshits. Lee took command with Jackson and Longstreet already in place, it's not his fault he didn't get to promote them.

And Lee's early defeats in West Virginia were probably not a campaign anyone could have won.

I agree with your overall point, though.
