You're probably deliberately misinterpreting my post, or being extra Theldorrinish for whatever reason.

Anyway, my computer shut down randomly. Blue screen flash, and restart. What are the odds that it was just Windows (XP) being faggy, and not some sort of malware that infected my computer if I've only had it for 2 months?

I've of course done a statistical study on computer faults, and have determined that 70% of the ones that cause spontaneous restarts are hardware related (which include device drivers). Only 1% were caused by malware.

Odds are stupid. People shouldn't talk about things in terms of odds, because the notion of them is silly. Probability is so much cleaner.

Anyway, I don't really have enough info to comment on your problem. If you think it's malware, then just run ad-aware. Although if you don't use IE, it's a bit uncommon to really get most malware on your system. All you really need to worry about are things like iTunes, or Sun Java.

But it is very probable that it was hardware. List your hardware and I'll evaluate which components are most likely to be at fault.

Software people blame it on hardware close to 95% of the time. The other 5% it's someone else's software that's the problem.

Back when I took math classes, I could never really understand odds, but had no problem with probability.

Anyway, I guess I really only wanted to assure myself that things aren't magically installing themselves on my computer. I don't have any preventive software(except for Norton, which will apparently expire in 5 days) and I really want to put it off longer, but I guess I won't.

This thread is now about programs I should download to keep my computer as virus free as Derek's sheets.
