A pretty famous musician from our area has had his life story turned into a documentary that will air nationally on cable TV.
But Jan Lewan's fame turned to infamy a few years ago.
The so-called "Polka King" from Hazleton was sent to prison in 2004 after pleading guilty to defrauding people out of millions of dollars.
At the Hazleton Senior Center it's not hard to find people who remember Jan Lewan.
"I always thought he had a good orchestra. I always used to listen to him as much as I could," said Joe Verano of Lattimer.
"I feel bad for the people he ripped off. That's really sad. People loved him in this area," said Carol Kay of Hazleton.
Fans loved Lewan so much he regularly played before thousands in Atlantic City but a bus crash in 2001 killed two members of his orchestra, and seriously injured his teenaged son.
Three years later Lewan was bankrupt and in prison, after admitting he sold millions of dollars of bogus securities to hundreds of investors.
Next week Court TV will debut a documentary about his life, "The Mystery of the Polka King."
"I think it's ridiculous that they're going to glamorize a criminal," said Rose Mary Debise of Hazleton.
Jeannine Mazurkiwecz, of Sam-Son Productions in Hazleton, was a family friend of the Lewans. Her company helped the filmmakers with the project.
"They came in here. We let them go through all our video and our archives, so a lot of our video will be seen in the documentary," Mazurkiwecz said.
Jan Lewan's enterprise in Hazleton stretched beyond music. It wasn't too many years ago that Lewan ran a gift shop along Route 309 in the city. That too was taken away when the "Polka King" lost his kingdom.
Now his hometown will get to see Lewan again on Court TV.
"And I think people here really want to see the documentary to remember the good old days of Jan Lewan, and the positives he did for the community," Mazurkiwecz added.
Not all the people in Hazleton want to see it.
No, absolutely not. No absolutely not," Debise added.
In November 2003, for example, Grammy-nominated polka star Jan Lewan pled guilty to charges that he defrauded investors in 21 states through the sale of promissory notes. State authorities said Lewan, who defected from Poland in 1979 and launched a successful career that included performances before President Reagan and Pope John Paul II, illegally persuaded investors to invest in a series of failing business ventures. Lewan offered promissory notes that were supposed to pay an interest rate of 12 to 20 percent. Authorities said investors lost between $2 million and $2.5 million. Lewan sold the promissory notes during a period of time when he was under a five-year ban by the Pennsylvania Securities Commission barring him from selling securities in the state. New Jersey authorities also acted against Lewan in 2003, fining him $950,000 and prohibiting him from selling securities in the state. |

It's probably because Orgy isn't using a 15-course meal or huge erect dicks as bait. |

It actually would be really amazing if we started a fan club and wrote him monthly letters about how we can look past his mistakes because his music still lives in our hearts. |

You gotta know his life story. His family defends his actions claiming he was too "Polish" to know that he was doing wrong.
You gotta see the documentary! |
