In my experience, the best way to deal with the Tokyo pronunciation problem is to simply tell the offender that the word has two syllables and not three.

Then things suddenly take care of themselves!

Oh man, forte.

Forte is a nightmare.

Basically it's a situation where, no matter which of the two pronunciations you choose, exactly half of the people who hear you say it will think you pronounced it correctly, while the other half will believe (and strongly) that you have pronounced it wrong, and have thus shown your ignorance. While the reality is that both pronunciations are correct, but virtually nobody knows this.

You can't win with forte.

That's because they're two different words with the same spelling, and one is from Italian and the other is from French.

Incidentally, they both SHOULD have the Italian pronunciation since the French borrows from Latin, which is the same as the Italian.

Anyway, I just found out I've been pronouncing Knuth wrong all this time. ;_;
