Scientology works by hypnosis. The cop who left scientology said they made him see hallucinations on television. So like when a newscaster was talking, he instead saw a reptilian monster.

There was this serial rapist in NY who hypnotized his victims to believe they were abducted by aliens.

I'm not sure how it works but there's apaprently a way to do it extremely subtly.
