Fuck, something happened to me where I've become deadly choosy about games bought for me. Yeah, I don't know why people care about this. Subspace Emissary was complete garbage. Wading through a shitty, knockoff Kirby game for hours isn't worth it to watch Captain Falcon punch R.O.B. in the face.

I doubt the reason Sakurai gave is the actual reason, however. I'm guessing they really couldn't make a story mode that would work on both the 3DS and the Wii U without making the stages look really low-res and shitty on the Wii U. I think the 3DS version is going to handicap the Wii U version in a lot of different ways but this might be the only way it benefits the Wii U version, if only indirectly.

It just sounds like they're slashing content for asinine reasons and that's infuriating. If your sequel doesn't have all the content of the previous game PLUS MORE then your sequel sucks. This along with the rumoured roster cuts makes me think this is going to end up being the Soul Calibur V of the Smash Bros. series. Gutted and full of clones.

I doubt it has anything to do with the 3DS version, though. He already said there's a mode exclusive to the 3DS (MII BULLSHIT ALL STAR CHALLENGE) and the stages are supposedly different from the Wii U version as well. It's either because people absolutely abhorred Subspace Emissary (Because it's all those things you said.) or they want to cut a year off the development time. Which is totally fine. You can say that's what it is, nobody would complain about that. This whole "The Internet is going to ruin the surprise." thing is a little bit insulting. Plus I liked the boss battles. I want to punch Ridley in the face all the time.
