| Maybe it was because they fucked up the lines a few times, and the audience was still giddy about it. |

What I mean is, anybody could say/do what Al did there, and people generally do in such situations. It's a reflexive reaction. It's a mundane auto-joke that you don't even think about. Why would you bother putting that into a script as if it's worth writing?
Sitcoms are totally mystifying and hilarious to me in that respect. So much of the writing is like that, just a steady stream of line after line of that type throughout every episode. The lines are not funny, and yet the audience laughs with this bizarre intensity and duration, even though actual people in that actual situation would not laugh at all (or would let out a quick chuckle AT MOST).

It is so presumptuous of sitcoms to expect people to find comedy within situations. _________________ Last edited by God on Fri Apr 05, 33 4:00 am; edited 1 time in total |

Jason keeps showing little FLASHES of his true form, just the smallest little hints, and the anticipation is kind of exciting.
I mean, obviously it's only a matter of time, but it really keeps you on the edge of your seat!

I had honestly hoped that my sitcom post wouldn't come off as insulting or whatever, but I feel like the shadow of the The thread thread has inescapably colored it. _________________ Last edited by God on Fri Apr 05, 33 4:00 am; edited 1 time in total |

To explain myself a little better: there is a certain kind of bizarre Pavlovian setup-response that exists EXACTLY and specifically in the context of being a member of the audience at a sitcom, in regards to certain types of humor.
People in a movie theater would not laugh at all (or at least in the same way), if the exact same dialogue were uttered in a movie.
Nor would people laugh in real life if it weren't dialogue, if it was actual stuff that people were saying and doing.
Whereas, if somebody farted or fell down, people would laugh no matter what, whether it was a sitcom, a movie, or life.
It's just an interesting phenomenon is all! |

I think you meant to say "the The thread thread. thread."
Either that or just "The thread thread.."
Otherwise it doesn't make sense. |

People in a theater would laugh exactly the same way regardless of anything.
There is going to be a sequel to The Hangover. End of veneration of theaters. |

I'm pretty sure the joke is that he finally made it through an entire hand without folding, showed what he thought was a winning hand, and upon learning that his hand was worthless, decided to fold once again, even though you're not even allowed to fold after the hand ends!
As a poker player, I don't see how you could miss that. |

I think you guys are misunderstanding what I mean. I get the point of the exchange.
It isn't really a "joke" joke though. It's not the kind of funny that elicits the physical reactions involved in laughter.
If you were standing next to those guys in the room and were not being observed, you would not laugh and would have no urge to laugh. You would not laugh if you were watching the show alone. You might smile, but that would be it.
That's what's weird to me about sitcoms: 75% of the laughter is not actual, organic laughter that emerges as an impulse. It's just social signaling between people in order to mutually endorse and show approval for an attempt at humor. It's a completely false, artificial behavior - a grotesque imitation of an impulse - engaged in solely to please.
It's fucking creepy when you think about it, and how much human behavior in general is of that type.
Now, consider somebody farting in a library, or a retard running around waving his arms. Not only do you laugh, you have to fight yourself to NOT laugh, also for social reasons. It's actual, real laughter, the thing that you're merely imitating in the sitcom audience.
Doesn't this dichotomy interest anyone else?? |
