Is it mostly an RPG with 1st person shooter combat? I saw some clips from Mass Effect 2 but I think I would like to play the 1st, also if the 2nd just leads right into a sequel I might just skip this series...

It is a planned trilogy so yeah I think it leads right into the next game. The gameplay in the first one isn't very good.
