I have to rewrite all the code I wrote at work, but factorization is just one part of the problem. It breaks down into three parts the way I see it:

1) Generating primes
2) Deriving prime factors
3) Counting numerators relatively prime to a given denominator

3 was the hardest to make fast; if you're actually traversing a list and checking which are not divisible by any prime factors, it's too slow. I guess it's not that tough of a problem conceptually but my answer seemed insanely off (hundreds of billions).

I actually thought it might be so many that they'd expect an equation that provides the answer. Although I'm guessing that's not the purpose of Project Euler.

I would use a database, so I guess hashtables are the way to go. Get a list of the numbers that have 3 as a factor, a list of numbers that have 5 as a factor, a list of numbers that have 7 as a factor, etc. All the way up to the largest prime that's under 1,000,000.

Then You just have to take the denominator, and look for numbers that aren't in one of the sets that it's a member of.

I don't think we're in the era of postmodernism anymore. I like to think we're in the era of what I call "interrealism". I think everyone is exposed to all philosophies so the result is us putting up walls and selectively choosing the philosophies that best fit us. It's not so much that people reject intrinsic value (like postmodernists), but they are burdened and confused by so many competing intrinsic values.


For example, every time you kill a bug, you feel some semblance of remorse resulting from exposure to Buddhist ideals and cartoons of talking bugs. Whether you like it or, your brain will make moral decisions based on the exposure of dozens of philosophies you probably don't agree with.


You see, I tend to side with the biological theory to philosophy. Math and logic are one thing, what you actually believe and why are a completely other thing.
