Scientologists only forbid avoid psychiatry/psychotherapy... they do believe though that through clearing the mind through Dianetics and their fucking "auditing" courses that they can eliminate most physical diseases from their lives.

I'm taking an intro psych course this semester because of distribution requirements. I'm disturbed by how constantly the book refers to "scientists" doing this or that, and how SCIENTIFIC it all is.

It actually kind of reminds me of Scientology! Scientologists make a big deal out of how they're REALLY a religion, and they've got the paperwork to prove it, and look at all the stuff they've got just like the other religions have, they're DEFINITELY a religion. In that same way my psych textbook draws inordinate attention to how much of what they're talking about is real science being studied by real scientists.

Well, psychology works, and has extremely valuable insight.

Psychological theory/therapy has solved a number of my problems.

I guess it's not 'hard science,' but it really can't be, since the mind isn't a physical thing with physical properties!

Psychology is, at best, like science without the models. Ie. it can record data and make identical predictions but not extrapolate that into making generalized predictions.

And then there's stuff like psychoanalysis, which has been demonstrated as a hoax.

It probably can't be reliably systematized.

If it could, then you get some intelligent people in there, rather than the dregs that are attracted to psychology.

I don't consider it to be 'working' when it happens to match reality in some particular situation.

That's like claiming some theory of gravitation is acceptable because every so often an object seems to match the model!

My uncle became fully insane, went to a mental hospital, now he is on tons of brain meds, and he functions normally with his wife and a kid. Two years ago, he was having random personality changes and once hiswife left him and took their kid to her parent's house, so my uncle went there, rang the bell asking for her, they wouldnt open the door, so he fired couple of shots at the door (he had a pistol with him) and went home.

So, in his case, something was better than nothing.

That sounds more like the product of neuroscience than psychology.

Psychologists aren't necessarily even medical doctors, MADali.
