The problem with thinking of that as a "strategy" is that it's a legitimate and fair thing that's been ruined by having become a cliche. Now everyone just thinks of it as bullshit simply because it's a cliche.

"I still want to be friends" is (USUALLY) bullshit, but with "it's not you, it's me" a lot of times, it really ISN'T you, it's me.

There's a lot of stuff like that, that you can't say anymore.

You're actually right, Chris. But 9 times out of 10, it's a bullshit excuse. The same with "I still want to be friends." (although I'm friends with a couple of my exes, but that's usually because I put in the work to maintain those friendships).

That, and I sincerely just don't have time for relationship stuff anymore. Time spent with others is time better spent working on homework and personal projects. In the event that I actually do genuinely feel like socializing, I have a small handful of friends I can call upon for that purpose. But this guy, as nice as he is, just doesn't bring anything special or unique to my life that I can't get from other friends in a more enjoyable or entertaining manner.
