Theldorrin already covered this point but Super Mario Bros. 3 isn't on there because it was an enormous success and sold millions of copies, it's on there because it allowed you to backtrack and skip certain levels/worlds.
How novel! |

Star Raiders is probably the most perplexing to me. It's one of the two I haven't played. And I can't fathom why it'd be on there. Space fighters? |

It might have something to do with the first person perspective.
But that's a two minutes on Wikipedia guess. |

It might also be the first game that had an ending. |

As in the game ends once you accomplish something, not an actual ending. |

Whoa! That would be significant.
Except Adventure was made in 1976, and as an Adventure game, I would assume it had an end. |

It wouldn't be their first oversight. |

Okay so it's conceptual importance, then why isn't there a single rpg in the list pc or console?
Fucking retarded... |

That is pretty silly.
Although it might be because they borrow so heavily from D&D. |

Super Mario 64 is absolutely more important than Super Mario Bros. 3 |

Not that that makes much sense either, considering their choices. |

Hey, I'm not trying to defend that list.
In fact I think think it's way off base.
But I've done enough research into the INTELLECTUAL RESEARCH side of video games to know how these ivory tower eggheads think.
These devils need an advocate. |

I personally think creating a genre or being the first with a particular idea shouldn't count for jack shit.
Especially with this list because most of those ideas were so blantantly obvious that somebody was going to do it eventually.
It should always be about the game that defined or revolutionized an existing idea.
That being said, Street Fighter II still shouldn't be on there. |

There's no reason some newer games shouldn't be on there. I mean fuck, god forbid you include Metal Gear Solid which truly blended cinematic storytelling and gameplay!
The list doesn't even acknowledge the last decade of games which is also stupid. It's not like all the good conceptual ideas have been fucking thought of yet. |
